"THE CALL"
MAIN TEXT:
1 KINGS 19:19-21
•Details the prophetic call of Elisha by the older prophet Elijah. It signifies the divine appointment of a successor, highlighting the themes of total commitment to God's Calling and the willingness to leave behind one's old life to serve.
THE ACT OF CALLING (vs 19)
Throwing the Cloak:
•Elijah finds Elisha plowing with twelve pairs of oxen and throws his cloak (or mantle) over him. In biblical times, this symbolic gesture defined the passing of prophetic authority, power, and ministry from one person to another.
GOD'S PERSPECTIVE:
•Elisha was a wealthy farmer, found at the back of the line doing monotonous daily work. This defines God’s preference for availability and faithfulness over outward status or traditional expectations.
THE DECISION (vs 20)
•Elisha runs after Elijah but asks to first say goodbye to his parents.
•After Elijah permits him, Elisha is faced with a choice: he must weigh human relationships and his old life against the priority of his spiritual calling.
THE TOTAL COMMITMENT (vs 21)
Burning bridges:
•To definitively close the chapter on his old life, Elisha slaughters his team of oxen and uses the wooden plowing equipment to cook the meat as a farewell feast for his people.
□This action is often defined as "going all-in" for God. It symbolizes a clean, permanent break from his wealth and worldly occupation
DISCIPLESHIP:
It concludes with Elisha leaving to "assist" or serve Elijah, demonstrating that true spiritual leadership often begins with humble discipleship and obedience.
