The fear of man is one of those sins that hides in plain sight. It looks like defensiveness, or an inability to say no, or a preacher who keeps softening the hard edges of a text. In this episode, Tommie is joined by Zach Schlegel, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Upper Marlboro, Maryland in the United States, to trace this theme through Scripture—from King Saul’s tragic insecurity to Jesus walking away from a crowd rather than compromising his message—and to think through the tools God gives us to fight it.

What exactly is sin—and does it matter how we sin, not just that we sin? In this conversation, Doug joins Banele as they explore one of the most foundational doctrines of the Christian faith. They investigate the difference between the guilt of sin and the pollution of sin, and why that distinction is essential for understanding justification and sanctification. They also unpack three categories of sin—weakness, folly, and deliberate rebellion—and show how recognising them shapes the way we care for one another in the local church. Grounded in Romans 3, 1 Thessalonians 5, and the wisdom of Augustine and Lloyd-Jones, this is a conversation that is as pastorally practical as it is theologically serious.

Six Cs that help churches think carefully about elder identification and training. From the competence to handle the word and the character to be followed, to the chemistry that can quietly make or break an eldership, they explore what it looks like to find men who are genuinely ready to shepherd God’s people. Honest, practical, and grounded in Scripture, this is a conversation worth having.

We glad to announce to you that our upcoming Imprint Weekender (13-16th August) is now open for registrations.

The Imprint Weekender is a weekend for pastors and church leaders where they get to see how a local church works in real life. We talk about things like church leadership, discipleship, membership, worship, and how the church is organised. It’s more about learning by seeing and asking questions than just listening to sermons or talks.

Be sure to register (by scanning the QR Code in the following picture slide or visit our website-link in the bio) and spread the word. We hope to see you there!

What does it mean to preach the Bible faithfully when the world and the devil are actively attacking a particular truth? In this episode, Tommie and Doug explore the discipline and courage required to bring Scripture to bear on the real pressures facing a congregation today. Drawing on Martin Luther’s challenge about confessing Christ at the precise point under attack, they discuss why expositional preaching is both the preacher’s greatest freedom and his most demanding accountability—the text sets the agenda, and the preacher must follow it wherever it leads.

Doug shares honest examples from his own ministry: an Easter Sunday sermon on Romans 2 aimed squarely at religious formalism; a tense engagement with Romans 13 before a Zimbabwean congregation living under corrupt government; and a deliberate decision to preach ingratitude—rather than homosexuality—as the main point of Romans 1. Along the way, they reflect on why knowing your congregation is as important as knowing your text, how to answer the “so what?” question without abandoning expositional integrity, and why the preacher who makes only vague applications may not be confessing Christ as boldly as he thinks.

They draw on Jesus’ instruction to his disciples to “come away and rest,” the Sabbath rhythms built into creation, and Paul’s warnings about undisciplined living, to chart a course between two ditches: lazy passivity on one side, and anxious productivity on the other.
