Nice morning to be out doing a little work! Replaced some treads on the bridge and gave it a fresh coat of water seal, trimmed some branches and sprayed some poison ivy.

As I researched the cemetery genealogy, I came across some stories about the people and their lives and families that I found interesting. These are a few mini-bios I ended up putting together. These include a line-of-duty officer death, a tornado, Civil War stories, and in the Owens paragraphs I delve just a tiny bit into some of the tangle of inter-connections and marriages throughout the cemetery that at times had my head spinning.

Please note this isn't anything formal, just some cleaned-up notes I collected as I tried to keep everything straight or make note of things of interest.

If there's anyone from your family at the cemetery in particular you'd like me to look into further, please let me know and I'll see what I can find. Or, if you have information to add or corrections to share, please do so!

Curious about our Board of Directors? Here's a quick summary of how we all are associated with the Cemetery! There are, of course, many more connections and inter-marriages with other families, but these are the direct family lines for each member.

We have had a BUSY year! We are super excited to share we have successfully completed another round of stone re-setting as well as a unique preservation of the cemetery founders’ stones. Huge thanks to Austin, Alex, and Nathan with Johnsons and Sons Monument Company for their hours of hard work as well as their ingenuity and helpful discussions on cemetery care!

Click through to see just some of these amazing improvements. We even uncovered a couple of names that had been face down for many years, and the cemetery looks better than ever!

At the center of our group's purpose is to honor the lives and memories of the people buried at the cemetery. These are a handful of photographs of some of the individuals who lived into the era of photography. If anyone has any old family photos that might include some of the others buried at Noland Cemetery, we would deeply appreciate if you would be willing to share them with us!

Annual Update for 2023!

With this year’s update we continue to have several new developments to share:

To begin with, once we finished the initial cleaning of all existing gravestones, we began two projects:

1. Burial map – the pencil draft has been completed and will be shared soon, once we have created a digital version.

2. Documentation of the lives of those at rest in the cemetery – we have been working on tracing the genealogy and connections of each individual and putting it all in a database, as well as documenting the history of the Noland family and the cemetery’s origins.

With all this information compiled, we needed a place to share it, so… we now have a website! Please visit https://sujavo.wixsite.com/noland-cemetery to see historical information, genealogy, photos, our wish list, and more. (You can also donate online with a PayPal account!)

In addition, the Board has authorized another round of stone re-setting and repair. As you probably know, this is expensive work and we can’t do everything we would like to at once. We were able to do one round of repair in 2015 on some of the most damaged stones, and we are following that up with more this Summer/Fall, again focusing on the stones that are most in need of rescue and able to be saved.

As we finish out these projects, we are also looking toward future improvements. Among these, we would like to address fencing in the next year. Again, this would be an expensive undertaking and we may only be able to do a portion at a time. If you would like to donate to the fence fund, we would deeply appreciate any extra assistance we can get!

Board members will be available to meet with you to discuss our work if you’d like to join us at the cemetery on Saturday, September 9 at 10:00am.

As always, we thank you for your donations and all you’ve done to support our efforts!

Yesterday was a beautiful day to be out at the cemetery for some research. Now that the stones have been cleaned, we are working on identifying every person we can & eventually mapping and even doing some genealogy.

The cemetery is freshly mowed and trimmed for Memorial Day and the weekend is looking to stay beautiful!

If anyone with better eyes than mine can help decipher and transcribe this document it would be appreciated! The first photo is my attempt at transcription; the other photos are copies of the legal document establishing the original trust in 1867. I'm happy to have my effort corrected/added to.

We have some exciting progress to share this year! Before we get to our big update, we have a couple of business items to share:

—We continue with the monthly mowing and we owe a huge thank you to ARL Landscaping, who has not raised our fee in 10 YEARS. While we fully understand and expect that may change at some point, we appreciate their generosity in helping us keep our costs low all this time.

—As a follow-up to our letter last year regarding dead but upright trees in the cemetery, after obtaining quotes we concluded the cost to remove them was far too high and not in our best financial interest at this time. However, if anyone has a contact who would be willing to help us take these out or offer a lowered rate, we would love to hear from you.

Now for the exciting news! Board Treasurer Cammy Shockey began exploring the process of safely cleaning the gravestones last year, and dove in this Spring with a full-scale project to clean ALL of the stones using D2 Biological Solution, a purchase authorized by the Board for this purpose. This solution is formulated for safe gravestone and monument cleaning and maintenance, and is used at National Monuments and sites such as Arlington Cemetery.

The results are simply astonishing! The cleaning has made some previously unreadable stones crisp and clear, and brought out etchings, designs, and even colors and marbling we didn’t even know were there. Furthermore, with so many more graves now readable, Cammy will be able to accomplish even more progress on her other ongoing project: mapping the full cemetery.

We invite you to come see this beautiful development at our annual meeting on Saturday, September 10 at 9:30am. (See also attached before and after photos of some of the gravestones.)
