Our new series starts this Sunday.

EARLY - What did the earliest Jesus-followers believe?

At first glance this seems like a trivial question. “Refer to the Gospels”, we might suggest. But the Gospels were written 40 years or more after the life of Jesus. This is a long period of time and seeing that scholars are becoming increasingly sure that the Gospels were not written by eyewitnesses, the question becomes even more pertinent.

So before the Gospels or even the earliest writings of the apostle Paul, what can we know about these very early followers of Jesus and what they believed?

Well as it turns out we actually seem to have pre-literary creeds and poem-like passages imbedded in our New Testament that pre-dates the earliest writings of the New Testament. The answers might surprise you as we follow the data.

It has become well known that the beliefs of the Church was not static, but a dynamic phenomena that shifted over time to bring us to the orthodox views, making all the more interesting the search for the earliest forms of those beliefs.

Join me for a couple of sessions as we explore the earliest and most significant of those passages to get a glimpse into the beliefs of the earliest Jesus-followers.

This exciting and thoughtful journey back into the historical-literary context of the Gospels will make them alive to you like never before.

Covering important contextual information ranging from the religions of the Greco-Roman world, their genre’s of literature, early Christian and Jewish movements, authors and sources to Gospels, we travel back to best try and understand the world in which our Gospels came to be.

We continue to our ultimate destination - the understanding of the Gospels through historical, literary, redactive, thematic and socio -historical methods, with which we tendevour to make sense of the differences and unique characteristics of these precious documents.

This study serves to inform devotional readings of the Gospels and enrich your understanding of how they came about.

We will follow an Oxford-Press University textbook as the framework for this informative journey together.
