This Labour Day, we honour the people whose work makes a difference every day.

We’re grateful for the many healthcare professionals, support staff and volunteers across Aotearoa whose dedication and care make a difference in people’s lives.

Today, we’re especially thankful for our hospital chaplains who offer comfort and care to the patients, whānau, and hospital staff who need it. Be it through a compassionate presence, listening ear, or an understanding conversation, chaplains help care for the whole person.

Thank you to everyone who works to support the wellbeing of others. We appreciate your dedication, care, and commitment.

✨Happy Labour Day from Hospital Chaplaincy Aotearoa.✨

Sometimes, you just need someone to sit down and listen when you feel anxious or alone.

✨That’s what hospital chaplains are there for.✨

They meet patients, whānau, and staff during some of the hardest times of their lives, offering them presence, support, and most importantly a listening ear.

Their priority is to make sure you feel heard, providing a safe and open environment for you to share your worries.

✨Hospital chaplains are for everybody.✨

“We are there to listen. We are there to comfort. We are there to show support.” – Rev. Matiu Best

You don’t need to be religious to speak with a hospital chaplain. They provide care to people of all faiths and beliefs, and to those with no faith at all.

Every day, chaplains support patients, whānau, and hospital staff through some of the most difficult times of their lives. They are a compassionate presence when it’s needed most.

That’s a wrap on Conference 2026!

Thank you to all our chaplains for travelling from all corners of the country to be a part of such an important event, and to everyone who helped to create such a meaningful and memorable experience.

This year, we learned a lot.

We heard from a number of guest speakers:
👉Matt Hawkins, Sports Chaplaincy NZ
👉Associate Professor Richard Egan, University of Otago
👉Dr. Elle Brittain, Senior Lecturer at Massey University
👉Hans Wouters, CEO NZ Spinal Trust

We also had several presentations from our own chaplains, exploring topics ranging from Moral Injury to the Discipline of Presence.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll unpack some of the key takeaways and insights from this year’s Conference, so stay tuned as we continue to share what has inspired us most.

But for now, one final thank you to everyone for all of your hard work, and see you next time! 💙

We’re coming to the end of our final day at the 2026 Hospital Chaplaincy Aotearoa Conference, and what a week we have had.

The week has been filled with interactive and engaging workshops, presentations, and speeches from experts across the breadth of chaplaincy.

The depth of the discussions we have been a part of is incredible, and the importance of having so many of our chaplains in one room together cannot be understated.

Thank you to everyone that has made this event possible, for all of the hard work and time put into bringing everybody together. 💙

Hospital chaplains are there for patients, whānau, and staff during some of life’s most difficult moments.

✨They are a calm presence in moments of uncertainty.
✨A listening ear when words are hard to find.
✨And a source of comfort when people need it most.

Their support extends beyond any particular faith or culture. They meet people where they are at, offering hope and connection in times of crisis, loss, and healing.

The 2026 Hospital Chaplaincy Aotearoa Conference has officially begun!

This year’s theme, “Aspire! – Pursuing Excellence in Chaplaincy”, is drawn from the Whakataukī:

“Whāia te iti Kahurangi, ki te tuohu koe, me he maunga teitei”

– “Seek the treasure that you value most dearly, if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.”

Over the next three days, chaplains and national staff will connect with colleagues from across Aotearoa to deepen their understanding of excellence in chaplaincy and gain inspiration to take forward in their spiritual care.

Follow along to find out what we get up to this week. 👉

What does belonging mean to you?

This Mental Health Awareness Week, the theme “Belonging Matters” reminds us that connection and community are vital to our wellbeing.

In hospitals this is even more true, as feelings of loneliness, uncertainty, grief, and fear can create a sense of disconnection from the outside world.

✨That’s where our hospital chaplains step in.✨

Through compassion and presence, our chaplains help patients, whānau, and staff understand they don't have to face difficult moments alone.

We explore some of the ways belonging supports mental wellbeing in our latest blog, along with some simple steps you can take to strengthen your own mental health.

“The chaplaincy services in a hospital are a critical part to treating the whole person.”
- David Warrington, GDO at Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Hospital chaplains can go through any door in the hospital. They offer time, presence, and support to anyone that needs it.

Chaplains also provide regular chapel services, bless rooms and hospital equipment, and work closely with hospital staff to ensure the hospital hapori are properly cared for.
