The Monkey Trap - THE CAUSE OF SUFFER.

In China, monkeys are caught in a very special way. The trapper first takes a coconut. He then makes a hole on its side just big enough for a hand to go through when it is not clenched into a fist. He then places some peanuts in the coconut and puts it in a spot where monkeys usually visit. Before leaving the coconut behind, he would scatter some peanuts around the coconut.

Sooner or later, a curious monkey would come along. It would first eat the peanuts on the ground. Then, it would find the coconut and see that it is full of peanuts. When it puts its hand into the hole to help itself to the peanuts, it would be unable to withdraw its hand, which is now a fist full of peanuts. No matter how hard it struggles and pulls, it would not get free. It would cry out loud and become very anxious.

All the monkey has to do is to let go of the peanuts to get free, but it would not want to do that. In this situation, the monkey is easily caught by the trapper.

We are like the monkey. We want to be free from suffering, but we are not willing to let go of our desires, which so often get us into trouble.

The Thief and the Master

One evening, Zen master Shichiri Kojun was reciting sutras when a thief entered his house with a sharp sword, demanding "money or life".

Without any fear, Shichiri said, "Don't disturb me! Help yourself with the money, it's in that drawer". And he resumed his recitation. The thief was startled by this unexpected reaction, but he proceeded with his business anyway. While he was helping himself with the money, the master stopped and called, "Don't take all of it. Leave some for me to pay my taxes tomorrow".

The thief left some money behind and prepared to leave. Just before he left, the master suddenly shouted at him, "You took my money and you didn't even thank me?! That's not polite!". This time, the thief was really shocked at such fearlessness. He thanked the master and ran away. The thief later told his friends that he had never been so frightened in his life.

A few days later, the thief was caught and confessed, among many others, his theft at Shichiri's house. When the master was called as a witness, he said, "No, this man did not steal anything from me. I gave him the money. He even thanked me for it." The thief was so touched that he decided to repent. Upon his release from prison, he became a disciple of the master and many years later, he attained Enlightenment.

Một tối nọ, Thiền sư Shichiri Kojun đang tĩnh tọa tụng kinh thì một tên trộm đột nhập vào phòng, lăm lăm cây kiếm sắc trong tay. Hắn ra lệnh: "Tiền hay là mạng sống?"

Không một chút sợ hãi, Shichiri Kojun đáp lời: "Đừng có làm phiền, tự lấy tiền đi. Tất cả ở trong ngăn bàn ấy" và ông lại tiếp tục ngồi tụng kinh. Tên trộm giật mình với phản ứng bất ngờ của nhà sư, nhưng vẫn miễn cưỡng tiến hành công việc của mình. Trong khi hắn ta đang bận rộn cho tiền vào túi thì vị thiền sư dừng lại và gọi lớn: "Đừng lấy hết. Hãy chừa lại một ít cho ta để trả tiền thuế vào ngày mai".

Tên trộm để một ít tiền lại và chuẩn bị rời đi. Ngay trước khi hắn ta kịp bước đi, bất chợt vị thiền sư gầm lên, "Anh lấy tiền của tôi mà cũng không cảm ơn được một tiếng sao!? Thật bất lịch sự". Lần này, tên trộm thật sự kinh hoàng trước sự gan góc lạ lùng của nhà sư. Hắn ta cảm tạ nhà sư và tẩu thoát. Hắn cũng kể lại với bạn bè của mình sau lần đó rằng "cả đời hắn chưa từng bao giờ thấy sợ hãi đến như vậy."

Vài hôm sau, tên trộm bị tóm và phải thú tội. Giữa những phi vụ khác, đó là vụ trộm trong nhà của Shichiri. Khi nhà chức trách đến mời để làm nhân chứng cho vụ án. Vị thiền sư nói: "Không, người này không trộm cái gì của tôi cả. Tôi cho cậu ta tiền. Cậu ta thậm chí còn cảm ơn tôi nữa". Tên trộm rất cảm động và bắt đầu muốn hối cải. Sau khi được phóng thích từ nhà tù, anh ta liền đến tham học làm đệ tử của nhà sư. Và nhiều năm sau nữa, cuối cùng anh ta đã đạt được sự giác ngộ.
