‘When the Bodhisatta came forth from his mother’s womb, he did not touch the earth. The four young gods received him and set him before his mother, saying: “Rejoice, O queen, a son of great power has been born to you.”’ (Acchariya Abbhuta Sutta)
On this very day, over 2,600 years ago (the 8th day of the 4th lunar month), the world welcomed the advent of “the Great Eye,” “the Great Light” – Shakyamuni Buddha. The birth of the World-Honored One on earth is a rare event, occurring only once in numerous eons.
Out of his compassion for all beings, he departed the tranquil Tusita heaven and descended into a world full of darkness, delusion, and defilement. Over three asankhyeya kalpa, diligently cultivated himself, practiced all the arduous deeds, and even sacrificed his flesh and blood for the path of enlightenment. The World-Honored One attained unsurpassed enlightenment and realized the truth.
The birth of the World-Honored One has brought boundless joy to all humans and devas. May the Grand Vesak Celebration be widely spread, so that many may establish an auspicious connection with the Buddha Dharma. Thenceforth, may all beings approach the truth, cease all suffering, and advance towards ultimate liberation.
