We are the oldest synagogue in continuous use under the American flag, and the second-oldest Jewish house of worship in the Western Hemisphere. Every part of the building tells a tale - from the sand floor to the Sephardic layout, to the mahagony furniture and the ancient but still carefully kindl

*📅 Why Do Jewish Dates “Change” Before Midnight?*
You may have noticed something confusing in our announcements — how can it be Friday, May 29, but also 13 or 14 Sivan?

*Here’s the simple explanation*:
In the Jewish calendar, the day begins at sunset — not at midnight. So:
- Before sunset on Friday → it is still the previous Hebrew date
- After sunset on Friday night (when Shabbat begins) → the Hebrew date changes

*For example*:
Friday afternoon = 13 Sivan
Friday evening (Shabbat) = 14 Sivan

That’s why announcements sometimes include both the civil date and the Hebrew date — they overlap depending on the time of day.

✨ The key idea:
In Jewish time, evening comes first, just like in creation:
"And there was evening, and there was morning..."

Today we give thanks for the very special women in our lives.
We know that being a mother, or being that steady and loving presence in someone’s life, is not only about blood relationships. So many women become mothers through love, care, wisdom, patience, and simply by showing up for others again and again.

Dear God and God of our Ancestors,

Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah, the mothers of our tradition, are mothers to us all. They were not perfect, yet they were holy. They struggled, they worried, they protected, they hoped, and through their lives they continue to bless us to this very day.

Through every generation, women have carried families, communities, and hearts upon their shoulders. They have sacrificed and celebrated, comforted and guided, fallen and risen again with extraordinary strength. For all they have done, and for all they tried to do, we are deeply grateful.

On this Mother’s Day, we ask Your blessing for all mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, aunts, mentors, and all the dear women who nurture others with love. Grant them strength when they are weary, patience when life feels overwhelming, clarity in moments of doubt, and the ability to feel the love they so freely give to others.

We ask Your blessing for those who are missing their mothers today, for those carrying grief, complicated memories, or words left unsaid. May they find comfort and gentle peace.

We ask Your blessing for mothers whose hearts ache for children they miss deeply, and for those carrying silent pain that others may never fully see.

We ask Your blessing for those longing to become mothers, waiting and hoping with tender hearts.

And we ask Your blessing upon all those whose love creates home and family within our community, reminding us that motherhood is often found in acts of kindness, presence, and compassion.

May all the women in our lives know how deeply cherished they are.
And may we each walk through this world with more grace, more tenderness, and more love.
