Most of us learned about Jonah as a story about a man and a fish.

But read it closely and it turns into something more uncomfortable — a story about a prophet who would rather see his enemies destroyed than saved. A man who was technically obedient and completely resistant at the same time.

And here's the thing the book keeps asking: who's actually the faithful one in this story?

That's not a question with a tidy answer. And maybe that's the point.

Good scripture doesn't just give us answers to memorize. It gives us questions worth sitting with. Questions about who we're willing to love, who we think God can use, and whether we're okay with God extending grace to people we'd rather he didn't.
Those questions aren't a sign that your faith is weak. They might be a sign that it's working.

Questions help us build our faith; we shouldn’t see them as flaws

Questions are what bring us from the preschool-Bible understanding of Jonah to the nuanced, multifaceted view we ended up with. We rely on the infrastructure of the ways we’ve been taught to understand our faith and scripture, but asking questions is how we continue to develop. We have to do this, otherwise our faith gets stiff and harder to use

Questions are often better than answers. How do we welcome those who have questions about faith?

Craig MacFarland was two years old when an accident stole his sight forever. He spent years at a school 500 miles from home, seeing his parents only three times a year. He walked into gymnasiums and heard kids whisper, “there’s that blind kid.” He had a teacher refuse to teach him because of his blindness.

And then he won over 100 gold medals.

Not because life got easier. Not because the obstacles disappeared. But because he made a decision — over and over again — that what happened to him would not be the loudest voice in the room.

That’s not just an athlete’s mindset. That’s a faith posture. The same one that carried Joseph through a pit and a prison. The same one that carried Paul through chains and shipwrecks. The same one that is available to you, right now, whatever you’re facing.

You are not what happened to you. You are what you choose to become — and with God’s help, that choice is always still in front of you.
