A TIDBIT OF TRUTH FOR TODAY

John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture saith, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

Have you ever tried to crank a lawnmower engine (or something similar) and had to keep pressing the prime bulb to get it to run.

I am reminded that sometimes we have trouble living the way God desires because we only get a ‘little gas’ rather than getting the pumped primed. We are like the water we had in the well where we lived during part of my teen years. There were many times that we were not getting water to the house and had to go work on the pump and tank sometimes needing to prime the pump to get the water flowing again.

We may come to church on Sunday to get a drink of spiritual water from the Word of God because we have gotten hot and thirsty as we have gone through the hot and dry desert of this world. We have the tendency to drink a little water of the Word providing a little satisfaction to the parched and dry mouths of our souls.

We then leave and wonder why it is so hard to make it through the week and wishing for another drink of water. We return the next Sunday to get our drink and thus continues a cycle in our lives. Is that what God really intended? Does God desire that we get just enough to quench a little of our spiritual thirst? I think not. I believe God provides the water needed on Sunday to make sure the pump is primed to give us what we need for the week. If we never take the water provided and pour it in the pump and use it, we will not have the continual flow all during the week.

Next time you are at church, don’t just get a quick drink. Fill up the pump so that it is primed to give you all the spiritual refreshment needed day after day for the coming week. Take what you have been given; apply it; and it will provide everything you need to make no matter how dry and hot this world around us gets.

Thought for the Day: There is plenty of water in the well of God’s Word but we must stay primed to continually drink from it.

A TIDBIT OF TRUTH FOR TODAY

James 1:5-8 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

James, under the inspiration of the Spirit, understood that many believers are impoverished in wisdom. The word lack in verse five refers to wanting or defective. There have been times when all of us have felt that we did not know how to handle the situation that had come into our life. We are in adequate because we are lacking in wisdom. However, if we understand that there is a deficiency in wisdom, we can come to God and ask Him to give us the wisdom needed. We can ask with the assurance that God will give unconditionally and generously.

James then points out that we are to “ask in faith.” No matter how desperate the situation might be, we can turn to God and ask for the wisdom expecting Him to show us the next step. James then adds “nothing wavering.” The suggestion here is that of doubt due to a lack of faith. We must come to God with no doubt that when we ask Him for wisdom, He will grant it to us. We then find a comparison of one who doubts to a wave in the ocean blown by the winds of a storm. It is fascinating to sit and watch the waves trying to roll in as a storm begins to brew on the ocean and the wind actually tosses the waves here and there. When one comes to God for wisdom and then runs and asks everyone else for their advice or tries this way and that way, they are indicating their lack of faith in God.

You should not go from counselor to counselor asking advice that will make you feel good. God will not give wisdom to those who do not ask Him in faith. The “double minded man” is one who has a divided loyalty. Today he follows the advice or teaching of one but tomorrow he will follow after the teaching of another. The result of a divided loyalty is restlessness. Don’t be a person who cannot make up their mind or decide which way to go.

Trust God to give you the wisdom you need.

Thought for the Day: Don’t ride the waves of man’s wisdom.
