Midweek Devotion

You Can’t Go Forward Looking Backwards

Philippians 3:12–13

Paul says, “forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.” The message is simple: you cannot fully embrace what God has placed before you while allowing what is behind you to keep controlling you.

Sometimes the problem is not that there is nothing ahead. The problem is that we keep staring backward. The rearview mirror has a purpose, but it was never designed to become your primary field of vision. You can learn from yesterday without living in yesterday.

Paul first admits that he has not arrived yet. That is maturity. Growth begins when we are honest enough to say, “God has brought me a long way, but He is not finished with me yet.” Yesterday’s accomplishments should never become today’s parking lot.

Then Paul says we must forget what is behind. Forgetting does not mean pretending it never happened. It means refusing to let what happened determine where you are going. Your past can teach you without tormenting you. Your history can shape you without imprisoning you.

And sometimes what we need to release is not just yesterday’s pain. It may also be yesterday’s success. What worked in one season can become a weight in the next. You cannot keep trying to reproduce where God was if He is calling you toward where He is leading now.

Finally, Paul says to reach forward. Faith is not simply believing God has something ahead; faith starts moving toward it. There is still purpose ahead. There is still growth ahead. There is still something worth reaching for.
So here is the word for this week:

Learn from it. Thank God you survived it. But refuse to live in it. The finish line isn’t back there.
Midweek Challenge

Ask yourself: What do I need to release? What is God calling me to reach for? And what one step can I take this week to move forward?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for everything You brought me through. Give me the wisdom to learn from my past without becoming trapped by it. Help me release old pain, old failures, and even old victories that no longer belong in this season. Fix my eyes on what You have ahead and give me courage to keep moving forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

You cannot grab what is in front of you while clutching what is behind you. Learn from the past, release the past, and keep reaching forward. The finish line isn’t back there.

The Importance of Faithful Church Attendance

Just as a fish cannot survive without water, a Christian cannot expect to grow spiritually while continually staying away from the fellowship of the local church. Church attendance does not save us, but faithful participation in church helps us grow through the preaching of God’s Word, fellowship, encouragement, prayer, and service.

Your pastor can preach, teach, counsel, and pray for you—but you must be willing to be present, listen, learn, and obey God’s Word. Spiritual growth requires personal commitment.

Don’t make church attendance optional. Be faithful to the house of God, because spiritual growth happens when we continually expose ourselves to God’s Word and godly fellowship.

Hebrews 10:25 (KJV)
“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another…”

1 Peter 2:2 (KJV)
“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”

“You cannot expect to grow spiritually while continually neglecting the place where you are taught, encouraged, corrected, and equipped through God’s Word.”
