Today is Monday of Holy Week. For those following the readings of daily Mass in Lent, the Biblical best has been saved for Holy Week. The book of the prophet Isaiah contains four separate descriptions of a “Suffering Servant”—a shadowy figure called by God to suffer and give his life for the people. Today we read the first description of the Christ-like Suffering Servant. Isaiah shows him as chosen by God and patiently preaching justice to the nations. It is almost a description of the dedicated, patient Jesus. The Responsorial Psalm is the prayer of the Suffering Servant.
In the Gospel, it is the memorial meal in Lazarus' house when Mary anointed Jesus' feet with costly perfume. There are overtones of death: the plot to kill the returned Lazarus as well as Christ, the anointing of Jesus for HIs burial. We note how the plot against Christ builds steadily towards its climax.
Collect for Monday of Holy Week: Grant, we pray, almighty God, that, though in our weakness we fail, we may be revived through the Passion of your Only Begotten Son. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
