In 1 Timothy 5:1-2 Paul deploys Timothy, urging believers in the local church to move from page to people--The gospel is at stake. To accomplish this engagement with (moving toward) others, Paul urges us to become proficient in the grace of godly self-awareness in the local church. Three thinking points help as we ponder approaching each other:

1. The Reasons Driving the Approach (Error requires confrontation; your example is to be seen up-close; your impact is to be inclusive, not selective; God’s Word provides complete contact wisdom; and church maturity demands generational buy-in.)
2. The Boundaries Framing the Approach (This is never an occasion to scold, dress down, or intimidate, but to strengthen, appeal, and counsel.)
3. The Endgame Following the Approach (Is approaching people worth it? Yes! Just look at the goal…what the Approach leaves in its wake in your church relationships: personal connect, biblical counsel, and undeniable godliness.)

The third stop in the process of biblical lament is "Ask." But, before we ask, we need to know 3 Essentials:

1. Clarify your perspective of "Asking."
2. Populate your go-to list for "Asking."
3. Learn from others' "Asking."

Paul in 1 Timothy 4:1-5 wanted his readers to be aware of prevalent false teaching--when it comes to the gospel and godliness, anything you add to Christ completely subtracts Christ. In fact, he warns that everything created by God will be assailed by Satan. So, expect the battle at every level (corporate, private, etc.), and watch for the 5 Footprints of false teaching:

1. The Menace of False Teaching
2. The Darkness of False Teaching
3. The Victims of False Teaching
4. The Preachers of False Teaching
5. The Message of False Teaching

False teachings' target and ultimate goal is big: to attack the sufficiency of Christ for your salvation and your growth in godliness. Remember, we don't need a list; we have a Person.
