Happy feast of Our Lady of the Rosary! 🙏📿 This day commemorates the anniversary of the decisive victory of the combined fleet of the Holy League of 1571 over the Ottoman navy at the Battle of Lepanto. As its army and navy expanded the territories of the Ottoman Empire, Muslim Ottoman forces had conquered Christian cities, including the island of Cyprus, where they burned churches and brutally killed and enslaved the population. Pope Saint Pius V organized a coalition of forces from Spain and other kingdoms to come to the aid of Christian cities. The pope called for all of Europe to pray a daily Rosary for victory and led a Rosary procession in Rome. After about five hours of fighting, the Christian forces triumphed even though they were outnumbered!
