A humble offering for all of us who are in this sacred union called marriage ... We must try to preserve our soul-saving union with our spouse at all costs, and not to abandon it so easily ... The evil one has done a fantastic job of convincing all of us that everything is disposable, and when it no longer satisfies us at the most shallow level, it's fine to walk away ... But our example should always be our Lord, who didn't walk away from even the most painful task He had in front of Him, though He could have ... Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

We don't get married to live happily ever after, to have children, to have a home. No, the main point is to enter the Kingdom of God together, which means that I am ready at any time to pay any price, to make any sacrifice and to endure any difficulty in marriage. Therefore, you cannot break off your marriage at the first difficulty that appears, or even if the difficulty continues, but it must be preserved... Marriage must rest and be built on this foundation, and that the mutual bond is built and strengthened on the joint march of the spouses to the Kingdom of God. This means that one must support the other, and both will move forward together towards the Kingdom of God.

Today the Orthodox Church was featured in the New York Times. An article explored the recent surge of growth in American Orthodoxy -- along with consequences of that growth. The article referenced a demographic some have called the "Orthobros," young men perhaps left behind by society, drawn to the "masculine perspective" that some find in Orthodoxy. What might Orthodox Christians say both to these young men and also to people who see a distortion in some newcomers' obsession with themes of gender roles and traditionalism?

Fr. Stephen Mathewes of Tennessee wrote this beautiful but short reflection in response:

"I love that the Orthodox Church is masculine—although, I would say that it is not so much masculine as it is paternal. Like a good father, the Orthodox Church sets an example for me, instructs me, challenges me, corrects me, even chastises me. It gives me disciplines to work on and learn from. It will not let me make excuses for myself, but to stand again and keep going. It reveals to me an inner strength that I didn't know I had (specifically, Christ energizing me). It prepares me to be in this difficult and treacherous world. It shapes me, and grows me into the person I need to be.

"And at the very same time, I love that the Orthodox Church is feminine—or, more rightly, maternal. Like a good mother, the Orthodox Church feeds me (the Eucharist), washes me (baptism and absolution), clothes me (baptismal garments and priestly vestments), provides me with a home (church) and a family (fellow members). It holds me in my pain, tends to my wounds, reassures me when I am frightened, comforts me. It doesn't tell me to stuff my feelings down, but gives them a voice in the prayers and hymns. It allows me to weep with sorrow and joy.

"And with both the paternal and maternal voice, the Church tells me how much I am loved.

"We need the Church to be both. And, thanks be to God, it is both." Amen.
