EVERY FAMILY HAS STORMS — BUT SOME STORMS GROW BECAUSE WE REFUSE TO FACE THEM.
David was a mighty king, a warrior, and a man after God’s own heart. Yet one of the most painful chapters of his life unfolded not on a battlefield, but inside his own family.
When Amnon violated his half-sister Tamar, David became angry—but Scripture does not record him taking decisive action to address what had happened.
And the problem didn't disappear because David failed to confront it.
It grew.
Tamar was devastated. Absalom became enraged. For two years, he carried that anger until he eventually arranged Amnon's death. Absalom fled, and even after his return, the broken relationship between father and son was never properly healed.
Eventually, unresolved family pain became national turmoil.
Absalom turned the hearts of the people against David. Rebellion broke out. David was forced to flee Jerusalem. A family crisis that had been allowed to fester eventually shook an entire kingdom.
That's why I say:
"Every family has storms. It's important to face them head on to survive them."
Healthy families aren't families that never experience conflict. Healthy families learn how to confront conflict, tell the truth, establish accountability, forgive, heal, and move forward.
Ignoring a problem isn't peace.
Silence isn't always reconciliation.
And time alone doesn't necessarily heal what nobody is willing to address.
Sometimes we say, "I don't want any drama." But refusing to have today's uncomfortable conversation can create tomorrow's devastating crisis.
You can be successful publicly while your family is bleeding privately.
Don't wait until the storm becomes a hurricane.
Pray about it. Talk about it. Confront what needs confronting. Forgive where forgiveness is needed. Set boundaries where boundaries are necessary. And get wise help when the situation requires it.
Face the storm together—because what a family refuses to confront today may become what threatens to divide it tomorrow.
