Historic Rock Chapel

Historic Rock Chapel Historic Rock Chapel is the oldest Methodist meeting place west of the Susquehanna River. It is now the oldest Methodist Church West of the Susquehanna River.

The Historic Rock Chapel is located at 4730 Oxford just northwest of the intersection of Oxford Road and Old Harrisburg Road in Huntington Township, PA. Rock Chapel was the first Methodist Church in Adams County with the first cornerstone being laid in 1773. After the cornerstone was laid in 1773, the building was stopped for a period of time due to lack of funds. During this time the unfinished b

uilding was used as a sheep pen. Rock Chapel was rebuilt in 1849 and a cemetery was also established. It is believed the cemetery probably pre-dates the new building as William Sadler, SR is said to have been buried there in 1848. During the Civil War, woolen blankets from Heikes’ woolen mill (located about 1 mile east of Rock Chapel) were hidden in the attic of the chapel to protect them from confiscation by Confederate troops encamped near what is now Heidlersburg. After the turn of the century activity dwindled at Rock Chapel and eventually ceased. In 1986, the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church recognized Rock Chapel as the site of the first Methodist meeting house in what was to later become the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Conference. Each year an Annual Homecoming and Memorial Service is held in honor of those who labored here so long ago.
