St. Joseph's Seminary Schola Cantorum

St. Joseph's Seminary Schola Cantorum St. Joseph's Seminary Schola Cantorum - Welcome to the Facebook home of the Schola Cantorum of St. Joseph's Seminary (Dunwoodie), located in Yonkers, NY.

The Schola Cantorum (Latin for “school of singers”) is a choir composed of seminarians from St. Joseph’s Seminary. Our primary mission is to sing praise to the glory of God and for the sanctification and edification of all who hear us in the context of the sacred liturgy (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, ¶112). As part of the formation program at St. Joseph’s Seminary, the work of the schola cantorum d

irects the talents and energy of its members into prayer and worship, offering to God the best that we can give. Through our work we learn to appreciate the Church’s rich treasury of sacred music. The discipline required in our work also aids in the human formation of the Schola’s members, shaping them into men who will work well with others to serve with pastoral sensitivity and compassionate hearts as priests of Jesus Christ. Upon completing a successful audition, seminarians are assigned to sing in the Schola Cantorum. We rehearse twice weekly for a total of about two and a half hours. We sing for Masses at the seminary, especially on solemnities and Sundays. On occasion, we also sing for Masses and concerts elsewhere. From our ranks are drawn the student organists and cantors who serve in the liturgies that compose the daily liturgical schedule of the seminary. Having been served by a distinguished line of conductors, the Schola Cantorum is currently directed by Prof. Conner D. McCain, associate professor and director of sacred music at Dunwoodie. In our work under the guidance of Fr. Matthew Ernest, director of sacred liturgy, we are honored to endeavor to continue the long tradition of excellence in sacred music at Dunwoodie.

We are delighted to share some wonderful musical news from right here in our wider New York Catholic community. Staten Island priest and producer Fr. Steven Challman released a world-premiere Lenten recording last year, drawing on his years of experience working with renowned artists from the professional music world. The work features the inspired music of composer Conner McCain, Associate Professor and Director of Sacred Music at Dunwoodie, whose writing beautifully serves the Church’s prayer, and the dedicated liturgical leadership of Fr. Matthew Ernest, whose vision for sacred music continues to enrich so many. Together, their collaboration brings to life a moving new soundscape for the holy season of Lent and is a powerful reminder of how sacred music can evangelize, inspire prayer, and draw hearts more closely to the mystery of the Cross.

We encourage you to read the full article and listen to the recording as part of your Lenten prayer. May this music help all of us to enter more deeply into the Lord’s Passion and prepare our hearts for Easter.

🎶 Throwback Thursday
For this , we look back to St. Joseph’s Day 2024, when the Schola Cantorum sang at the liturgy for the Feast of St. Joseph, our patron. Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan was principal celebrant at the Mass, and our priestly faculty concelebrated. It was a beautiful Patronal Mass and day, and a good memory as we approach another St. Joseph’s Day. Watch to the end and enjoy.

Register now for this Summer's "History and Principles of Sacred Music" at https://bit.ly/SJSSum26 and learn from the seminary's Director of Sacred Music himself, Conner McCain, Ph.D. (cand.)!

This course dives into the story of sacred music — from its historical roots to the principles that still shape it in the Church today. In that course we explore:
* The beauty and philosophy behind sacred music
* What the Church — the Universal Church and U.S. bishops’ guidance — actually teaches about liturgical music
* How to plan and evaluate music for the liturgy
* Inculturation and the role of sacred music in parish life

Whether you're a musician, clergy member, liturgy planner, or simply love sacred music, this course connects history, theology, and real-world parish practice. Sacred music isn’t accidental. Just as our Schola is directed, so is this music guided, shaped, and entrusted to us.
