Our beloved Maia would have turned 81 tomorrow. Still so very missed!
Maia's intentionality was always clear to me. She had a vigorous, rigorous, undeniable, but still always questioning, devotion to God and to sharing her conviction through her gift of music. I recently found one of her personal essays that she shared with me, 'Signposts Along the Way' -- here, the first and last paragraphs:
Setting forth on the journey of the soul requires courage and honesty. The intentionality of one's path is far more crucial than the actual destination. But there are helps along the way; signposts that give a nod in the right direction, a blessing of the footsteps, or perhaps a caveat to the soul's inclination. Yet the more we try to plot out the course of the journey, the more curves it seems to throw in our direction. We learn by stumbling, over and over again.........
We are at 'the crossing of the ways', and only by holding to an integrity of purpose, will we find those who can guide us on this road, no matter where it leads, or in what strange land we find ourselves. We cannot evaluate ourselves, our lives, our work, our faith, our motives; we can only go on in the trust that our intentionality toward the good is worth something, and that our desire is noted. Beyond that, it is entirely up to God.
