Sacred music by definition is music for church... Go figure all this time I thought any music used for the sake of worshiping one's God was considered sacred.. So question for you all... Is contemporary Christian music that some churches consider inappropriate not sacred?

On this day (March 2nd) in 1824 Bedrich Smetana was born. The first time I heard his "The Moldau" I was overwhelmed. It is such a beautiful piece. He only lived 60 years.

George F. Handel who composed the Messiah was born on this February 23rd. Do you find it amazing that some music of long ago seems ageless? His death was in 1759 and the Messiah is still played many times during the Christmas Season in most towns.

Happy birthday to Andres Segovia Torres, God rest his soul. A classical guitarist who lived to be 94. Years ago I just about wore out a cassette of his music. It was wonderful.

If you have ever studied piano, you no doubt are familiar with exercises by Carl Czerny who wrote over 1000 works in his 66 years of life. A student of Beethoven, he thought mastering piano technic was of upmost importance.

Happy birthday to Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) most famous for his "Celebrated Minuet" from the String Quartet in E Op.11, No. 5. This familiar melody was used in 'The Ladykiller" movie as well as a few commercials and dramas.

Happy birthday to Andre' Mathieu, God rest his soul. The Canadian child prodigy known as "The Canadian Mozart" only lived to 39 years due to Cirrhosis of the liver. I have wondered most of my life why so many musicians struggle so much with alcoholism or drug addictions.
