But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name be joyful in You. For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous;
With favor You will surround him as with a shield. Psalm 5:11-12

The final installment of these devotions directs our thoughts to the reality of the world around us. The world and its inhabitants are pleased with their wickedness, boast in their own accomplishments, have little acquaintance with telling the truth and revel in harming others. As a believer, we are reminded daily that this is not our home. However, while we are on this part of our journey and evil surrounds us know that your God is nearby. We experience His favor every day. Our Father delights in us, supplying us with joy and protection. His favor surrounds us with a shield.

Trust in the Lord in the Lord in your daily struggle, friend. Praise the One Who never takes His eye off His child! You are never alone!

The Worshippers Handbook: Where do I find safety? Psalm 4

Men have set up many false gods in their lives. Men enthrone the gods of power, momentary monetary satisfaction, supposed self-sufficiency, pleasure or even personal acquaintances to bring them joy and comfort. All these false gods will fail the test of hard times & distress. So many events occur in life that strip our souls of safety and comfort. These idols do not offer the comfort for which we cry in these hours!

Turn your eyes to God’s holy hill…twice already in the Psalms the worshipper notes this phrase, (2:6) “Yet I have set My King on My holy hill…”, “I cried to the Lord with my voice, and he heard me from His holy hill.” (3:4) The true worshipper turns his eyes, ears, heart and voice toward God’s holy hill. It is not a geographical place. No, it is near. A believer turns his eyes heavenward and calls out and God will answer. He is the God of justice, who feels our hurt and offers tender mercy. The Psalmist says, “He relieves me”, which can be translated “He makes room for me” or “brings me near”. He is ready to hear my complaint, my sorrow, my hurt, my failure, and my plea for mercy! Yes, the whole world may turn away but the Lord will hear when I call to Him. (3).

The worshipper’s connection to God allows him to be still and wait for God’s intervention in their sorrow (4). He puts gladness in your heart regardless of the enemy, the devastation or trouble that surrounds you. (7) Finally, the Lord will give you peace (8). Lie down unafraid, blessed worshipper, for it is the Lord Who makes you dwell in safety. Praise His wonderful name!

From the Worship Handbook, Psalm 3…

The Psalmist shares this personal experience in Psalm 3. He reminds us of one of the many reasons God’s people lift His name daily in praise!

David had felt the sting of betrayal. His son, whom he loved and trusted, stole the hearts of Israel and took his kingdom. David found himself on the run, from his own child. Trouble increased all around him and many of his enemies rose to join the fight against him. Their taunt? “There is no help for him in God.”

His enemies were mistaken. David did suffer dark days of loneliness and hurt. Other may fail him, but his God never will…

But You, O LORD, are a shield about me, My glory, and the One who lifts my head.

I was crying to the LORD with my voice, And He answered me from His holy mountain.

Selah.

I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the LORD sustains me.

I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me round about. Psalm 3:3-7

Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God!

Let the enemies roar and try to bring us to the point of despair. The situation we face may seem quite desperate and we may feel very alone. But in the end, we shall praise the Lord, for His blessing is upon His people!

Friendship…a final word. “Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing. “ 1 Thessalonians 5:11 Friends help each other when they need comfort and build up their friends with encouraging words. Friends are a positive part of our daily lives!

So, just a few questions for you…

1) Who has been a spiritual friend to you? Thank the Lord for placing these people in your life! Seek their counsel!

2) Who in your life can you reach out to with your friendship? Invest in others!

3) Pray that the Lord will make you a better spiritual friend. We need each other!

Friendship…Christ followers, like Jesus, make friends! The Scriptures do warn us about those who are dangerous to us and our Christian walk and should be avoided…

The Angry…Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered,
or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared. Proverbs 22:24-25

The Scorner…These people often do their work to “tear down” in secret…Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended. Proverbs 22:10

The Critics…The critics of this world mean to hurt others with their words while ignoring their own faults…Jesus spoke about their personal blindness, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” Matthew 7:3

Those who love self over God and others… “People will be lovers of themselves…having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. 2 Timothy 3:1-5

Open your hearts to others in the love of Christ and be a friend to many. Beware of those who will hurt you and entice you to walk away from following Jesus!
