Unitarian Universalist churches and Quaker meetings are seeing a surge in interest in Maine, which is considered one of the least religious states in the country. A recent survey found that a quarter of Mainers identified their religion as "nothing in particular." But in the second story in this two-part series on the UU-Quaker revival, new members say they're looking for — and finding — a sense of community, and an inclusive environment with social justice at the core.

Maine consistently ranks as one of the least religious states in the entire country — 49th, according to the latest report from Pew Research Center. But a couple of denominations are bucking that trend: Unitarian Universalism and Quakerism for example. In the first of a two-part series, we look at the reasons why.

“You cannot volunteer at your own church, in the same way you cannot babysit your own kid. Because the church belongs to you in the same way your family does. It’s your own place, your own people. So of course you help take care of it. Of course you do yard work and make coffee and teach the kids and sing in the choir and whatever all else it is you do for the home and the people that you love.”

Looking down Portland Street toward Main Street, this 1870's photograph captured a view of Yarmouth that has changed surprisingly little in the intervening years. At the end of the street sits First Universalist Church, built as the Central Parish Church in 1860. The steeple just barely visible in the trees to the left is First Parish Church, built in 1867-68. Both churches are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

As part of a continuing series (stay tuned), the Yarmouth History Center has shared photographs and information about several landmarks and events relating to the town's incorporation in 1849.
