The Mount Marty University BLI Sophomore retreat has begun! This is the 2nd cohort of students this year to attend the 4 day leadership retreat to the Rocky Mountains.

Students will be immersed in the ancient wisdom of St. Benedict as they learn to apply the ancient principles of the Benedictine Monastic Wisdom Tradition to their personal lives.

1. Self Knowledge

3. Awareness of God
4. Commitment to way of life

All are invited to attend tomorrow's 7th annual Aquinas Lecture at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Sioux Falls. Doors open at 6:30pm and the program begins at 7pm. This year's speaker is Dr. Kevin Hood Gary from Hillsdale College and his talk is titled "Boredom and the Quest for the Good Life."

We will have an open beer and wine bar and a reception with light refreshments following the lecture. Registration is not required, but appreciated. Link is in the comments.

The Mount Marty University Freshman BLI Great Adventure Retreat has begun!

100 students & leaders headed west across the great state of South Dakota to the Black Hills. Keep us in your prayers as students seek what St. Benedictine called, “a way that leads to life.” (RB prologue 20)

Over four days we will watch them come to life as they listen and learn more about themselves and the importance of the Benedictine value of community.

The Benedictine Way of Life requires a starting point. For Benedict the 1st Step of Humility requires us to take inventory of our life. The Rule of Benedict teaches that we need to be aware of the state of our mind & heart (RB 7:14).

Lesson #1 - Search your mind & heart reflecting on the areas of our life we are fighting the good fight & where we are just bystanders and being a critic?

The students are all in; dove deep right away. That’s a great sign of the transformation to come.

The Sophomore Summit Expedition has come to a conclusion. Four days of adventure, friendship, and interior work bonded the group of 60 students and leaders adding to the strength of the Mount Marty University community.

Guided by the Benedictine principle of “conversatio”, a way of formation and transformation the students return to campus with a greater depth and breadth of who they are and what it means to be in community of brothers and sisters pursing a fuller life.

May Christ continue to bless us and hold the mold.

Morning (unplanned) lesson - Grumbling 2 Gratitude

Last night we didn’t get into our rooms until 10 PM. After being on the road since 5 AM there was a good chance students & leaders would start complaining; what Benedict calls grumbling. He warns against it many times in his Rule for Monks.

This morning we reflected briefly on why Benedict would be so attentive to squashing a grumbling spirit in his monks and The students came up with a few good reasons why grumbling isn’t good.

Then we used a simple reflection technique to turn grumbling into gratitude by calling to mind one thing we’re grateful for in the last 24 hours. Then we began the Retreat Lesson #2 - Created with Purpose!
