Surrounded by love, our sweet mother slipped peacefully away to her eternal home in heaven on the evening of August 6, 2026. Her generous heart touched so many lives, and she leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, love, family, friendship, and community.
Patsye Ann Robinson Underwood, affectionately known as "Pats," was born on May 1, 1938, to Lomie and Dolly Grubb Robinson. She grew up in a loving family that included two younger sisters and a host of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She adored her family, and they returned that love. Family gatherings were among Patsye's favorite pastimes. She was blessed by, and deeply proud of, her heritage.
Patsye was educated in Wythe County Public Schools and was a proud member of the George Wythe High School Class of 1955. Years later, she continued her education at Wytheville Community College.
Patsye married Harold Dean Underwood, and from their marriage grew a beautiful, bustling family of six children: Jimmy Dean, Robyn, Barry, Bryan, Dreama, and Angel. In the years that followed, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren arrived and stole Patsye's heart. She found great joy in her cherished role as "MawMaw."
Patsye was immensely proud of her grandchildren and found great pleasure in attending their birthday parties, supporting them at their sporting and scholastic events, and simply cheering them on through life. She cherished her role as "MawMaw," and to her grandchildren, she truly was the very best.
Patsye was also an adoring bonus mom to at least a dozen other children. She was beloved by the neighborhood children, whom she affectionately called "the Monroe Street Gang." Patsye never met a child she did not love.
For 15 years, Patsye served faithfully alongside her husband during his ministry with United Methodist churches in Bland and Giles counties. She was a devoted minister's wife who worked tirelessly in the churches and was deeply loved by the congregations. She helped with church youth programs and founded the first chapter of United Methodist Women on the Mechanicsburg Charge in Bland County.
While living in Bland and Giles counties, Patsye volunteered in her children's schools, chaperoned dances, and became known as a wonderful school mom. As the "fun mom," she was always in demand for school activities and dances. She also supported her children through Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts.
For most of her life, Patsye was a stay-at-home mom. As her children grew older, she entered the workplace and served in a variety of roles. She worked at the local sand plant with her niece; spent several years in the Wythe County school system; managed a local Christmas and collectibles store; and completed her career as the part-time secretary of her beloved home church, St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville. For years, Patsye and her sister were food vendors at the local Chautauqua Festival, where they sold barbecue sandwiches and all the fixings and were loved by festival attendees.
Patsye loved her community and served in many local organizations. She was a proud member of the Wytheville Ladies Ruritan Club, where she spent many hours serving in the funnel cake tent at the local Chautauqua Festival. She treasured her fellow Lady Ruritans and the friendships they built. She was also a member of the Wythe County Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Wythe County Republican Women, and she served as a lay speaker. Patsye was always quick to volunteer whenever her help was needed. She was a proud George Wythe High School Mighty Maroon Band mom and an enthusiastic supporter of GWHS athletics, especially football. As an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, she formed many lifelong friendships.
Patsye was preceded in death by her mother and father, Lomie and Dolly Robinson; her former husband, Harold Dean Underwood; her sister and brother-in-law, Janie and James Jones Jr.; her father-in-law, George Hyle Underwood; her mother-in-law, Georgia Underwood; her brother-in-law, William "Tommy" Underwood; and her special brother-in-law, Doug Underwood. She was also preceded in death by a special group of friends who were like sisters to herāEdna, Betty, Margaret, and Hattieāand by her very special bonus daughter, Jennifer "JJ" Jones.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, her pride and joy: Jimmy Dean Underwood; Robyn Underwood; Barry and Crystal Underwood; Bryan Underwood; Dreama Underwood Walters; and Angel and her husband, Stacy Spangler. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Brenton and Jessica Underwood, Savanna Underwood, Jacob Underwood, Joshua Underwood, Jason Underwood, Bailey Walters, Riley Spangler, Brady Walters, and Mia Spangler; and her two great-grandchildren, Harry and Foster.
Also surviving are her beloved sister, Loma Robinson Porter, and her husband, Doug; her sister-in-law, Adrienne Underwood; her special bonus children, Charles, Keith, and Kevin Duprey, Gene Jones, and Lonnie Thomas; and her Melton grandchildren, Leysa, Robby, and Mandee. She also leaves behind her special niece, Patricia Jones Tickle Dishon ("Trishie"); her beloved nieces and nephews, Sherry Pugh, Delta Hutton, Alan Dale Jones, and Tony Underwood; her very special best friend, Patricia Bennett; and her cousins and friends. Patsye deeply loved all of her Grubb, Robinson, and Underwood families. She especially enjoyed visits from Bailey's boyfriend, Nashville singer-songwriter Dustin Kines. During his visits, Dustin played guitar, and he and Patsye sang duets of hymns and old country songs. He spent the last week of Patsye's life with her, playing and singing her favorite hymns and old rock-and-roll songs. Her family is deeply indebted and grateful to Dustin for the joy he brought Patsye through his visits and music. Patsye claimed him as her "boyfriend," too.
Patsye was always ready for a fun outing or a new adventure, and she especially loved to travel. She even attended a KISS concert with her children and delighted in the shows at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre. She loved playing bingo at the Wytheville Moose Lodge. At Christmastime, she visited the Big Apple and saw the Rockettes. Over the years, she attended many concerts, including performances by George Strait, Randy Travis, and Kenny Chesneyāwhom she once gave a jar of her homemade jelly backstage. Among her treasured travels was a Hawaiian vacation shared with her daughter and cousins.
Patsye never met a stranger, and you never heard her say a negative word about anyone or anything. She was always full of positivity and optimism. She also delighted in life's simple pleasures: a good cup of coffee, Little Debbie snack cakes, and the red lipstick she never went anywhere without. She met challenges and obstacles head-on and saw them through to the end. Even when her means were modest, you would never have known it. To Patsye, life was rich and full of blessings. She was strong in her faith, and her life was a testimony to that faith.
We will deeply miss her presence, but we take comfort in knowing she is now at peace, reunited with the loved ones who went before her. Although life will be difficult without her here, we will find strength in knowing that our greatest cheerleader is watching over us and cheering us on from above. Her love, guidance, and spirit will live forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
We would like to thank everyone who has reached out during this time, and all those who loved and cared for our mother. We are certain she loved you in return. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Wythe County Community Hospital and to CARIS Hospice for their compassionate care. A very special thank you goes to the staff of Carrington Place in Wytheville, who cared for and loved Patsye like family since 2018.

Funeral service will be held 3 P.M. Saturday, August 15, 2026, at St. Paul United Methodist Church conducted by Reverend Aubrey Whitlow with interment to follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
