Centering Thoughts: Do you want to follow Jesus? We readily tell children “Yes! The smartest thing you could do is to follow Jesus.” But do we really believe this? We like God’s promises, but the road can seem far from desirable. It can look downright foolish and impossible. But then again, this faith we proclaim, isn’t one that calls us to be spectators of Christ’s cross, but to be those who follow him into its death that we might be raised within his new life. To follow in this way is to not merely have faith, but to live faith.

Centering Thoughts: The saying goes, “Traditionalism is the dead faith of the living. Tradition is the living faith of the dead.” So very little separates the two, besides one thing. In traditionalism, the fear of losing the past is too great to let go, and eventually both past and future are lost. While tradition gives the courage and wisdom from the past to reach out towards the future, allowing both past and future to be vibrantly sustained. What are you holding on to that God invites you to reach out beyond?

Centering Thoughts: The Great Commission concluding Matthew’s Gospel has often been read as “marching orders to the church” to convert the world to the way of Christ. All of this at the command, and by the authority, of Jesus. But in the larger context of Matthew’s Gospel, such a reading doesn’t make sense. Rather, it would appear Jesus is declaring the discontinuation of any limitation to the mercy and care of God. When you think of Jesus’ authority, how do you view it? Is it an authority of conquest, liberation, or something else?
