A number of you asked for a copy of the prayer of lament from the service today. Here you go, feel free to pass it on.
A Prayer of Lament for Alex and Liam
How long, O Lord?
How long will the cries of the grieving rise to heaven before justice answers?
How long will blood cry out from the ground before mercy and truth meet?
God of the brokenhearted,
we come to you with heavy souls and trembling hope.
We lament the killing of Alex Pretti—
a son, a neighbor, a nurse, a human being made in your image.
We grieve a life taken too soon,
and the ripple of sorrow that now spreads through family, friends, and community.
We also lift before you little Liam—
a child torn from the safety of home,
carrying fear no child should have to carry.
Hold him close, Lord.
Be his shelter, his comfort, his fierce protector.
Restore what has been stolen from his sense of safety,
and surround his family with courage, advocates, and hope.
How long, O Lord,
will power crush the vulnerable?
How long will policies wound the innocent?
How long will families be fractured,
children traumatized,
and truth buried beneath spin and fear?
We confess our anger.
We confess our exhaustion.
We confess that sometimes we feel numb,
and other times we feel ready to scream.
Receive all of it, God—
our tears, our rage, our confusion, our despair—
as prayer.
Be near to the grieving.
Be near to those protesting.
Be near to those afraid to leave their homes.
Be near to those who feel unseen, unsafe, and unheard.
Let your justice roll down like waters,
and your righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
Give us holy stubbornness
to keep showing up,
to keep telling the truth,
to keep loving our neighbors,
to keep believing that your Kingdom
is not built on fear, but on mercy.
How long, O Lord?
Until you heal what is broken.
Until you lift the oppressed.
Until every child is safe.
Until every life is honored.
Until your peace has the final word.
We wait.
We lament.
We trust—
even through tears.
In the name of Jesus we pray and we believe, Amen.
