Today at St. Sahag & St. Mesrob, we witnessed a burgeoning choir. As the curtain opened, there were two voices. Soon there were four, then six, then eight. By the time the Badarak reached the Gospel Procession, we were eleven!

It was a joy to join our voices together and feel our song rise heavenward. Singing as a choir adds a beautiful dimension to the celebration of the Badarak, allowing us to offer our praise not only in prayer, but also through song.

If you have ever thought about joining the choir, we would be delighted to have you with us. Whether you are an experienced singer or simply have a desire to participate more fully in the Badarak through song, there is a place for you among us. Please speak with one of the choir members—or just come and join us. Every voice enriches our worship, and we would love to welcome you into this growing — and spiritually rewarding — ministry.

Accompanying them were our Youth Director Sonia Placido, Chaperone & Coach Jeff Placido, Chaperone & Coach Alex Topakbashian, as well as chaperones Alexis Topakbashian and Jeff Sevag. Forty-one of our ACYOA Jrs members traveled up on Friday afternoon. Our chapter was greeted with a warm welcome and housed by the loving local families. On Saturday & Sunday, our ACYOA Jrs competed with two teams in co-ed volleyball, two teams in girls basketball, and two teams in boys basketball. Several of our members also competed in the individual sports competitions of chess, tavloo and ping pong. We came home with the following sports trophies:

Girls Basketball, 2nd Place
Boys Ping Pong, 2nd Place Armen Sharoyan

In addition to sports competition, our ACYOA Jrs enjoyed a Saturday evening dance, participated in Badarak Sunday morning, celebrated at an Awards Dinner Banquet Sunday evening and made memories to last a lifetime.

We were fortunate to have our Primate, His Grace Bishop Mesrob Parsamyan, present throughout the weekend. We are grateful he not only celebrated Badarak on Sunday but also cheered us on during the sports competitions all weekend.

There were 288 ACYOA Jrs from 16 parishes across the Eastern Diocese in attendance… a weekend to remember! Thank you Der Arakel and Yn. Natasha Aljalian, as well as Youth Minister Maria Derderian for welcoming us to your parish and for your dedication to our youth. ՄԱՀԱԶԴ - OBITUARY – MAHAZT

Dear Parishioners, Community Members and Friends,

It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of Anthony J. Vraim, on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the age of 77.

Anthony J. Vraim, born Anthony J. Vraimopoulos, 77, passed away suddenly on May 20, 2026, at his home in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Born on July 11, 1948, to the late John and Christina (Matsios) Vraimopoulos.

Anthony, Tony to most, was an extremely patriotic American, and equally proud Greek American. He ensured to educate his children of their family lineage, from freedom fighters against the Turks, to their coming to the United States; founding multiple businesses in Wildwood, Philadelphia, and Delaware County.

In his early years, Tony resided in Philadelphia until his father moved the family to the current location of Vraim Funeral Home, 66 S. State Road, Upper Darby. This is the place where he would leave his biggest mark on his beloved community, Greek and non-Greek. He was extremely thankful to be adopted by the Armenian and Albanian communities and felt right at home with them respectively.

After graduating from Upper Darby High School where with much success, he wrestled and competed as a gymnast, as well as sang in the choir. Tony attended Temple University and American Academy McAllister Institute, mortuary science school. After graduating, while working for his father at the funeral home, he served as Delaware County Coroner and officially took over his father’s business in 1979. He devoted the next forty years to faithfully serving his community. During this time, he met his first wife Michele, and they began raising their family.

Tony possessed an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, devouring books and embracing a lifelong passion for learning. Fluent and literate and in multiple languages, he took great pleasure in sharing his knowledge with others. He often spoke at local schools and volunteered as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. He especially loved educating children on any subject. His grandchildren frequently turned to him with their endless questions, knowing he would always have an answer, a story, or a bit of wisdom to share.

Tony had many passions throughout his life; including scuba diving, skiing, surfing, riding his BMW motorcycle, sailing, classical music, camping, the opera, and traveling. He was continuously searching for opportunities to involve his sons in all of his interests.

Participating in the theater was another passion of his. It is there that he met his beloved wife Jennifer, the two were in their element when supporting each other through their various theater productions, eventually founding a theater group in their local community in Brigantine, New Jersey. The couple retired in Atlantic City, where they spent their years traveling the world and fulfilling his dream of living on the water.

Tony was a devoted member of St. Demetrios Church and served as parish council president, choir director, as well as past president of AHEPA.

Tony was a Merchant Mariner achieving his Master Captain Unlimited License and avidly supported multiple veteran’s organizations.

Tony was a man of great principle, he has taught his sons countless life lessons through words, but more so by actions. He believed in leading by example, showing his sons the importance and impact of helping others with kindness, generosity, and compassion.

He will be deeply missed by those he leaves behind. His loving wife Jennifer Smith, his admiring sons Michael (Jennifer), and David (Amber), his adoring grandchildren, Gabriella, Anthony John “AJ” (his namesake), Lila, and Emily. He is also survived by his sister, Connie (Ken) Matty, several nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, as well as Albert (Lori) LaBriccioso who he grew to love like a brother as they worked side by side for thirty years.

Family and friends are invited to a visitation, Thursday May 28, 2026, from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at, St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 229 Powell Ln, Upper Darby, PA 19082.

Those in the funeral industry are invited to a visitation, Thursday May 28, 2026, from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m.

A second visitation will be held in the church on Friday May 29, 2026, from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m., followed by his funeral service to begin at 11 a.m.

Burial at sea at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests that memorial donations in Tony’s name be made to your respective church or a charitable organization of your choice. They also ask that you consider giving someone in your life, that may need it, a little assistance in his memory.

May the Lord illuminate his soul in His eternal Kingdom and grant peace to the surviving members of the family.

ՄԱՀԱԶԴ - OBITUARY – MAHAZT

Dear Parishioners, Community Members and Friends,

It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of Laraine Kazanjian-Ballard on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at the age of 68.

Laraine Kazanjian-Ballard, 68, of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on May 23, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. A devoted wife, loving mother, doting grandmother, cherished daughter, supportive sister, adoring aunt, and a treasured friend. Laraine’s loss is felt deeply by her family and the countless people whose lives she touched.

Laraine was the second of five daughters born to Florence and the late Edward Kazanjian. After attending Marple Newtown High School, Laraine graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School where she met Bruce, her husband of 41 years. She later received her MBA from Temple University.

Laraine lived a life deeply rooted in family, faith, music, and community. She was a longstanding member of St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Armenian Church in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, where she shared her gift of music as an organist for 30 years and served in various leadership roles on the Parish Council and Women’s Guild. She was also an active member of the Episcopal Academy community where she served as the Episcopal Academy Parents Association President, formed lifelong friendships, and generously gave her time, energy, and heart.

Laraine will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, resilience, and unwavering love for her family. She had a remarkable way of making everyone feel welcomed, cared for, and valued - always with a big smile. She loved playing the piano, cooking for her family, hosting gatherings, gardening, traveling, listening to Sundays with Sinatra, watching the Phillies, playing tavloo (backgammon), spending time at the beach in Avalon, sewing, and celebrating the Armenian community. Above all, her greatest joy came from caring for and being surrounded by those she loved.

She is survived by her mother Florence; her husband Bruce; her children, Armena, Christopher (Molly), and Michael (Jennifer); her grandchildren, Lucy and Jack; her sisters, Robin Williams (Gerald), Nancy DerSimonian (Nishan), Lisa Kazanjian (Steve Coyne), and Dina Kazanjian (Charles Simonian); and her cherished nieces and nephews, Mark (Carly), Alexis (Ryan), Dean, Jane, Ana, Nicholas, Chloe, and Perri. She is predeceased by her father, Edward Kazanjian.

To say Laraine will be missed is an extraordinary understatement. Her life was a gift to all who knew her.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, May 28, 2026, at St. Sahag & St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church, 630 Clothier Road, Wynnewood, PA 19096.

Viewing: 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m.

A private interment will follow.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Laraine to St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Armenian Church Permanent Endowment Fund, 630 Clothier Road, Wynnewood, PA 19096.

The Pastor and Parish Council extend their deepest sympathies to The Ballard, Kazanjian, Williams, DerSimonian, and Simonian Families.

May the Lord illuminate her soul in His eternal Kingdom and grant peace to the surviving members of the family.

We are incredibly proud to share the news that our Youth Director, Sonia Placido, was honored with a prestigious national recognition at this weekend's ACYOA Juniors Hye M'rtsoom Sports Weekend in Watertown, MA.

Sonia was presented with “The Rev. Fr. Haroutiun and Yn. Patricia Dagley Award.” This meaningful award is given each year to a layperson for his/her continued devotion to the youth of the Armenian Church, in loving memory of a Pastor and Yeretzgin whose commitment continues to be an exemplary model for all Christians.

As highlighted by the ACYOA Central Council, Sonia is certainly the embodiment of this honor. She doesn't just manage programs, she pours her heart into mentoring our young people, fostering faith and fellowship, and creating a supportive community where the next generation can thrive. Her tireless energy behind the scenes and her passion for guiding our youth were on full display as she accepted this well-deserved honor to a resounding round of applause from the entire ACYOA family at the Sunday evening banquet at St. James Armenian church.

Thank you, Sonia, for your unwavering dedication and for being such an inspirational leader for our youth and our entire church community. Congratulations. This recognition is so richly deserved!

We had a fantastic time on a beautiful afternoon yesterday under the tent at St. Sahag & St. Mesrob. The Women’s Guild hosted a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” brunch following Badarak, with the board & friends dressing as Holly Golightly from the 1961 classic movie. An overflowing table held a bountiful brunch, plentiful sweets, and refreshing mimosas to celebrate a joyful few hours together as Church Family. It was lovely to have Der Armash, Yn. Maran & Natan and Naira join us.

Thank you to all the many women who helped in preparing the food, decorating the setting, serving our friends & family, and leaving everything as tidy as we found it.
