Here are three scriptures tied in with several thoughts I have had simmering for a while on the idea of NOT preaching for gain. Paul was an excellent example of preaching out of sincerity and love for the truth, and so all three scriptures come from his writings.

SCRIPTURE #1
"Some indeed preach Christ even from envy … from selfish ambition, not sincerely … but [others] out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, CHRIST IS PREACHED; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.” Philippians‬ ‭1‬:‭15‬-‭18‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

SCRIPTURE #2
“For we are not, as so many, PEDDLING the word of God; but as of sincerity, but as from God, we speak in the sight of God in Christ.” (2 Corinthians 2:17)

SCRIPTURE #3
“What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not ABUSE MY AUTHORITY in the gospel.” ‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭9‬:‭18‬ ‭NKJV

I appreciate men who go out of their way to preach the gospel at the expense of personal gain.

I appreciate men who give away their sermon notes. They don’t care if others share what they preached or said, as long as it’s true. They don’t ask for credit; they don’t need credit. Why? Because their reward is that Christ is preached.

I appreciate men who allow their sermons to be recorded and put online for the benefit of any and everyone. They aren’t worried about potentially losing out on a gospel meeting because everyone’s already heard all their sermons online. Why? Because their reward is that Christ is preached.

I appreciate men who say, “I was wrong.” They don’t hesitate to lose their pride and admit error when shown the truth. Why? Because they don’t preach from selfish ambition.

I appreciate men who actually have a home congregation and devote themselves to it. They aren’t gone to speak at a different congregation every weekend. They devote themselves to their home congregation because they realize they need to hear more than they need to speak. They resist the urge to collect a check for teaching for a congregation as a means to supplement their income. Why? Because they don’t abuse their authority in the gospel.

There are many great men of faith that have a set an example of all these qualities in my lifetime, and I admire them greatly. May God bless all those who preach the gospel out of sincerity and love for God and His truth.

God is full of mercy, grace, love, truth, and justice (Exodus 34:6-7).

Always has been and always will.

Beware of statements that pit the God of the Old Testament against the God of the New Testament, as if one is more gracious or just than the other. Large swaths of scripture are always overlooked in such statements.

1. BECAUSE IF I LOVE GOD'S WORD, THEN I WILL READ IT (INDIVIDUALLY AND AS A FAMILY).

Psalm 119:97, 113, 163, 47, 127
97 Oh, how I love Your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
113 … I love your law.
163 … I love your law.
47 And I will delight myself in Your commandments,
Which I love.
127 Therefore I love Your commandments
More than [making money]!

2. BECAUSE IT'S ONLY BY GOD'S WORD THAT I (AND MY FAMILY) WILL KNOW GOD'S WILL FOR MY/OUR LIFE.

2 Peter 1:3, 19
3 … His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness…
19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed…

Whether by spiritual principle or by a very clear and direct statement, God’s word has the answers to all these questions. God’s word contains wisdom and direction for every single thing that life will throw at you and your family.

3. BECAUSE IT'S GOD'S WORD THAT CONTAINS THE MYSTERIES OF SALVATION FOR EVERY PERSON IN YOUR FAMILY.

James 1:18
18 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.
21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
1 Peter 1:23
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever.

The word of God contains the words of life that your family needs constant exposure to not only be saved, but to keep on being saved and grow closer to the one who saves.

4. BECAUSE THE HUSBAND AND FATHER HAS THE SPIRITUAL RESPONSIBILITY TO LEAD THE FAMILY, AND LEADING THE FAMILY IN BIBLE READING IS THE MOST SIMPLE WAY OF ENSURING THIS.

Ephesians 6:4
4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
Ephesians 5:23
23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
Genesis 18:19
19 For I (God) have known him (Abraham), in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.”

Are there other ways of ensuring that you are spiritually leading your family? Yes. Some fathers are extraordinary and make it a habit of talking about the Bible with their families while they go down the road, when they do household chores, and whenever there is opportunity. Their children are very spiritually minded because of their efforts.

But for fathers and single mothers who don’t have this habit engrained in them, maybe they are embarrassed by their failing in this area, or they are intimidated by the idea of spiritually leading, they need something simple and routine. Any man can call his family together to read a chapter of the Bible and pray
