🐾 Bolt, Boo, and Manasseh — “The Fox Who Still Believed in Chains”

Manasseh the fox hadn’t been to Possum Church since Christmas.

He used to sit in the back, where he could hear the hymns but didn’t have to meet too many eyes. After what he did, he figured distance was safer.

Years ago, hunger had driven him to a terrible thing.
He had killed and eaten Thimble’s brother.

He confessed.
He repented.
God forgave him.

But the animals remembered.

So Manasseh drifted into the woods, away from the hollow tree, away from the songs, away from the quiet reminder that God still wanted him.

One cold evening, he stared into the dark and whispered,
“I’m forgiven in heaven… but I’m still in prison down here.”

A twig snapped.

Bolt and Boo stepped out of the trees.

“There you are,” Boo said. “You know hiding from church never works, right?”

Manasseh looked away.

“Everyone knows what I am.”

Bolt sat beside him.

“Yeah,” he said. “A sinner.”

Manasseh flinched.

“And so am I,” Bolt added. “And so is Boo. Romans 3:23 says, ‘For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.’ Not just foxes.”

Manasseh swallowed.

“They still see me as dangerous.”

“People remember,” Bolt said gently. “But God says something else. Isaiah 43:25 says, ‘I am He who blots out your transgressions… and I will not remember your sins.’”

Boo flicked a leaf into the creek.

“God doesn’t keep a criminal record.”

Manasseh’s voice trembled.

“I don’t belong there anymore.”

Bolt shook his head.

“1 Corinthians 6 says, ‘Such were some of you… but you were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.’ That means your past isn’t who you are anymore.”

Manasseh looked up.

“They still bring it up.”

“Romans 8:1 says, ‘There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,’” Bolt replied. “That includes you.”

Boo sat down beside Manasseh.

“Church isn’t for perfect animals,” he said. “It’s for forgiven ones.”

Manasseh felt tears sting his eyes.

“I didn’t think anyone would come looking for me.”

Bolt smiled.

“Galatians 6 says we’re supposed to carry each other when one of us falls. That’s what family does.”

The woods felt quieter.

And for the first time since Christmas, Manasseh stood up and walked back toward the light — not as a fox in chains, but as a brother.
