Today we welcomed Community Forester Amanda Knox of the Missouri Department of Conservation to the cemetery. Society President Jerry Prouhet and Secretary Marie Hollenbeck
showed Amanda the work volunteers began this spring clearing honeysuckle and undesirable trees from the woodland area west of Block 5.
Amanda provided advice on what other trees should be removed to open the canopy of the wooded area and allow the sun to shine on the small white oak and hickory saplings. Sunlight is vitally important for the young trees, particularly the oaks, to thrive, Amanda said. She commended the Society for its work removing the invasive honeysuckle to allow native trees and woodland flowers to reclaim the area.
Society members are making plans to apply for cost-share funding offered by the Department that will pay half the costs of removing a large white oak tree on the eastern edge of Block 8.
We sincerely appreciate Amanda sharing her knowledge with us and look forward to working with her and other Conservation Department staff. We will keep you informed as we continue
consulting with the knowledgeable foresters of our Missouri Conservation Department.
