Jesus loves Worcester, Massachusetts, and so does Emmaus City Church. He walked with them, talked with them, and stayed with them.

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus met two people who thought He was still dead after being crucified. And at the meal, He broke bread with them - then they realized it was Him. He was alive, resurrected, and bringing new death-defying and relationship-restoring life into God's world. So we intentionally share this good news as we love our neighbors, open our homes, serve those we meet, and share our lives with people in our diverse city so that many can experience and enjoy the life God graciously gives through life with Jesus and each other.

In August of 1806, five students at Williams College in western Massachusetts were caught in a thunderstorm walking back from a field where they had been meeting to pray. They took shelter beside a haystack and prayed there in the rain — for the gospel to reach Asia.

America had no foreign missions movement. No sending agency, no funding, no ships, no precedent. These were undergraduates in a farming town in the Berkshires with no means whatsoever off doing the thing they were asking for.

Nothing happened that afternoon.

It was four years before the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions existed. Six before the first missionaries sailed out of Salem in 1812. Among them was Adoniram Judson, bound for Burma. Judson reached Burma in 1813 and did not see a single convert until 1819, six years after he arrived and thirteen years after that first prayer under the haystack. Six years of learning a language, preaching to people who were not interested, and writing letters home to a board that had every financial reason to recall him.

The first Burmese believer was baptized in 1819. The church he was part of planting is still there, more than two centuries later, in a country that has been trying to end it for most of that time.

Five students.
One rainstorm.
Six years of praying, waiting, working,
with no fruit ...

Then everything.

We can't thank Jesus enough for how He continues to reveal Himself and His Kingdom of mercy, justice, and righteousness that pierces our weary world, bringing light to the darkness. What a story. What a Savior. And what a family we have in Jesus like Raúl, Kaitlin, and Resurrection CRC in East Boston.

Special Back2School Prayer & Praise Night starting at 4 p.m. in less than two hours! Praying for our time together now as we seek to bless our students and teachers in Worcester:

"God of all grace, it really is amazing grace that we get to know we are loved by You. Increase our joy in Your salvation today, and may nothing and no one steal our joy. May Your power rest on us as we turn our eyes to You, Jesus. Thank You for Your sacrificial love for us, Lord of life, light, and love. Invite us to come to the altar again where Your arms are open wide to receive us. Thank You for displaying Your heart for us. Holy Spirit, shine the light in the darkness and give us the heart of Christ for schools throughout Worcester that we may shine with You. Help people to behold You in their classrooms, particularly when students feel lost, last, and lonely. Fill them up with humility, holiness, and hope in You, the One who will never leave them nor forsake them. May we say 'Yes' to Your call to faith, hope, and love today. We can't do this on our own, but that's why we pray 'through Christ in me.' In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen."
