With travel restrictions in place preventing travel, the Holy Land Commission conducted its Spring visit via Zoom. The commission visited with His Beatitude, Cardinal Pizzaballa, who identified job creation as a critical area of focus in the coming years to make the Holy Land Christians less dependent on the hospitality industry and become more self-sufficient. Sami El-Yousef lead the Jerusalem staff in a series of operational reports that was interrupted by a “Take Shelter” warning that lasted several minutes. During that time, shrapnel resulting from a missile defense system activation fell on the Greek Orthodox church blocks away from the Patriarchate. A clear example of the current issues facing Christians everyday. Economic conditions present serious challenges. Inflation couple with the rise in value of the New Israeli Shekel vs the US dollar and Euro (donations are received in dollars and Euros) has reduced purchasing power by 15-17%. This effects all areas of the Patriarchate budget – schools, parishes and humanitarian aid – resulting in a significant deceit. This is especially challenging as the needs are increasing during this time of armed conflict. Since the Commission visited virtually, they were able to also meet with Bishop Twal and the staff in Jordan. While experiencing some economic pressures, the LPJ has been able to keep the schools open and the parish activities going. Mrs Carol Jad’oun, the new CEO of the LPJ Jordan schools, shared the strategic plan for the schools that emphasizes academic performance standardized and strengthening the teaching of Christian values. The need for teacher training, on an ongoing basis, is a big priority. The Commission continues its virtual visits later in the week.
