After an earthquake, amid dust and rubble, barking was heard for two consecutive days. Rescuers believed they would find a person trapped beneath the debris.

Instead, they found a Golden Retriever covered in dirt, lying over a severely injured cat. He was not trapped. He could have left.

He chose to stay.

The dog remained there, protecting the cat from the cold, the unstable surroundings, and abandonment. According to reports, they were the only survivors of the house. Cases like this reflect something documented in animal behavior science: dogs have strong social attachment and can direct care and protection toward other individuals, including those of different species, especially when a prior bond exists.

Calling it instinct does not diminish its meaning. Social instinct is also the foundation of what we call affection, loyalty, and empathy in highly social mammals. Science recognizes that animals form complex bonds. What we see in stories like this is not romanticization. It is the expression of a real connection between beings who share fear, proximity, and survival.

Thanks Janet Burkhart

This week, we’re honored to highlight another board member, Janet, whose connection to our homeless neighbors began years ago through her work at Trinity and her involvement with Wooster’s Homelessness Taskforce.

Those early relationships opened her eyes to the depth of need in our community, and ultimately inspired her to help shape the creation of Homeward Bound.

When she thinks about our mission, one thing stands out most: the joy of seeing guests become stable enough to move into housing.
She describes Homeward Bound in two words, caring support, and her favorite moments are the celebrations that ripple through the shelter when someone walks in and announces they’ve gotten a job. Those victories, big and small, remind her why this work matters.

She wishes more people knew just how deeply our guests appreciate the meals and hospitality they receive each day.

Outside of her board service, she enjoys quilting and taking her dog, Sally, for peaceful walks at Barnes Preserve.

When asked to finish the sentence “Homeward Bound makes me feel…” she didn’t hesitate: “Proud that I have had a small part in getting it started.

Scotland has passed a law mandating the inclusion of “swift bricks” in all new buildings to create nesting spaces for urban birds. 🐦

These hollow blocks are integrated into the sides of buildings. They are cost-effective and help restore habitats lost due to renovations and modern insulation systems. The measure aims to halt the sharp decline of swifts, whose population has plummeted by nearly 60% since 1995. ⚠️

The regulation will also benefit other urban birds, such as sparrows and starlings, and will come into force following a 12-month technical consultation process.

It is a small change in construction that could have a major impact on urban biodiversity.
