World class musicians and reciters of the Aurea Ensemble gave a magnificent performance titled "The New and Dangerous Opinions of Roger Williams" yesterday at the historic Smithfield Friends Meetinghouse in Union Village! The group played music dating to the 17th century and recited passages written about and by Roger Williams and nearby Native Americans. The performance was funded by grants from the RI Humanities and the RI 250th Commission.

The Aurea Ensemble will offer a free performance, “New & Dangerous Opinions of Roger Williams”, at 12:30 pm on Sunday, October 25, at the Smithfield Friends Meeting House, 108 Smithfield Road, Woonsocket, RI.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, please join us for Aurea’s compelling program, New and Dangerous Opinions of Roger Williams. Set during the founding of Rhode Island, a dramatic political and philosophical moment in colonial America, the program highlights his contemporary relevance, groundbreaking revolutionary ideas, and deeply respectful alliance with indigenous inhabitants. The show utilizes Aurea’s signature blending of music and poetry to create a transcendent story that includes writings of Roger Williams and his translations from the Narragansett language, merged with indigenous poetry, Old English and American hymns, music of Purcell, Handel, William Byrd, Charles Ives, Barbara Kolb, with readings by Nigel Gore and Chris Turner punctuated by Turner’s evocative harmonica improvisations.

Aurea is an innovative chamber ensemble engaged in a joyous pursuit to investigate and invigorate the harmony of music and the spoken word. Its concerts combine poetry, drama, classical and folk music, with Chris Turner’s harmonica improvisations, into performances that sweep from intimate chamber settings to major theatrical venues. The group has performed in Rhode Island and nationwide for more than 20 years.

The Smithfield Meeting of the Society of Friends in Woonsocket will host the event, which is co-sponsored by the Woonsocket Historical Society.
Organizers encourage the public to attend. Ample parking is available across the street in the Union Cemetery.

Despite dreary weather, Smithfield Monthly Meeting of Friends was delighted to host a screening of the documentary “Union Village” Sunday evening that brought many community members to the meetinghouse for the first time. The film by Christian de Rezendes, which tells the story of Union Village and featured the role of Smithfield Meeting and some of its prominent members during and after the Revolutionary War, was written by Allison Horrocks and produced by the North Smithfield Heritage Association through grants by the RI 250 Commission and Ocean State Media.

We were so happy to see Friends from nearby and far away who braved the weather to enjoy our Smithfield Monthly Meeting programmed service with a sermon by the Rev. Natalia deRezendes, singing, and gathered for fellowship in our basement gathering room after Meeting for Worship yesterday!

We thank the Obadiah Brown Benevolent Fund for the grant that funded repairs to the meetinghouse front portico and side entrance. Phoenix Builders of North Smithfield replaced all the rotted wood with maintenance-free PVC. It looks fabulous!

Today, we were pleased to worship with a longtime Friend, Randy Oftedahl, who is visiting from Prince Edward Island. Randy was very active at the Smithfield Monthly Meeting from 1987 to 2007.

Also, we welcomed Natalia's friend, Maggie!

We thank Greg Duhamel and Jonelle, from Friends of Oak Hill Cemetery in Woonsocket, who recently placed a wreath at three Revolutionary War veteran graves in the Friends Cemetery at 108 Smithfield Rd, Woonsocket. They are pictured at James Brayton's grave.

Friends of Oak Hill Cemetery ordered wreaths from Wreaths Across America to place at most of the Revolutionary War veteran graves in Woonsocket to commemorate the nation's 250th Anniversary.

James was a freed slave and Revolutionary War veteran. The house he built was on Great Rd across the street from Lapre Road.
