This quote carries a weight the Bible speaks plainly about.
“I can only tell you the truth. I can’t make you believe it.”
That is the burden of every preacher, every witness, every child of God who opens the Scriptures. We are called to speak truth faithfully—but only God can open the heart to receive it.
The Bible says in Ezekiel 3:27:
“He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house.”
God told Ezekiel: preach what I say. Some will hear. Some will refuse. But tell them anyway.
And that same truth is seen in John 3:19:
“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”
The truth is not always rejected because it is unclear. Sometimes it is rejected because hearts love darkness more than light.
Even our Lord Jesus Christ spoke perfect truth, yet many still turned away. In John 6:66:
“From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.”
Jesus did not soften the truth to keep people comfortable. He spoke what was right. The choice to believe was theirs.
That is why Romans 10:17 says:
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Our responsibility is to speak the Word. God’s responsibility is to convict. Each person’s responsibility is to believe or reject.
So preach the truth. Tell them about repentance. Tell them about salvation through Christ. Tell them about heaven and hell. Tell them what God has said.
And if some refuse, remember 2 Timothy 4:2:
“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
You cannot force belief into someone’s heart. You cannot argue someone into surrender. But you can stand on the Word of God and speak it boldly.
Truth told is still truth—even when refused.
And one day every soul will answer for what they heard.
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” — John 17:17 KJV
