The 92nd Annual Pilgrimage in Honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help opened with a solemn procession of the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to the Shrine altar, followed by the celebration of the Divine Liturgy.

With this year’s theme, “Theotokos: Beacon of Hope,” pilgrims gathered in prayer as Archbishop William Skurla of Pittsburgh celebrated the Divine Liturgy, joined by Most Rev. Artur Bubnevych of Phoenix and Most Rev. Nil Lushchak, Auxiliary Bishop of Mukachevo.

At the conclusion of the liturgy, pilgrims were warmly welcomed by Sr. Susan Sisko, OSBM, as the pilgrimage continued in prayer and fellowship.

This weekend, we will join the The Sisters of St. Basil the Great on Mount Saint Macrina in Uniontown, PA, for the 92nd Annual Pilgrimage in Honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, under this year’s beautiful theme: “Theotokos: Beacon of Hope.” 🙏🏻
If you are unable to join us in person, we invite you, our eparchial family, to share your prayer intentions in the comments or by sending us a message.
It will be our honor to carry your intentions with us in prayer as we gather before the Theotokos, who leads us always to her Son and remains a beacon of hope for all who turn to her.
Throughout the weekend, we will share highlights of the pilgrimage here, so that together, whether on Mt. Macrina or from wherever you are, we may be united in faith, prayer, and devotion.

Today, September 1, the Byzantine Catholic Church begins a new liturgical year.

The Byzantine liturgical year is beautifully guided by the life of the Theotokos, the Mother of God. We celebrate her Nativity on September 8 and her Dormition on August 15. In this way, the liturgical year begins just before her birth and ends just after her Dormition.

The Theotokos is revealed to us as a guide. In many icons, she is shown pointing toward her Son, Our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ. Her whole life directs us toward Him.

As we enter this new liturgical year, may we entrust ourselves to the guidance and intercession of the Theotokos. May she lead us through the feasts and fasts, through times of joy and times of trial, and always draw us closer to her Son.

Scenes from the 72nd Holy Dormition Pilgrimage

The faithful gathered in prayer for the Panakhyda and Moleben to the Mother of God, celebrated by Bishop Kurt Burnette.

Between the Panakhyda and Moleben, pilgrims took part in a candlelight procession to the Grotto, carrying their prayers and intentions as they journeyed together in faith.

In the glow of candlelight, the faithful entrusted their loved ones and a world suffering from war and injustice to the loving intercession of the Mother of God.

Scenes from the 72nd Holy Dormition Pilgrimage

The Divine Liturgy was celebrated by The V. Rev. Mitred Archpriest Marek Visnovsky, STM, MSc, Rector of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Passaic, New Jersey.

The Divine Liturgy was offered for the repose of the soul of Anthony Jonathan Hernandez, son of Laura Hernandez, who has served the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate in Sloatsburg.

Jonathan was born on August 30, 2001, in Nyack, New York. In February 2026, he volunteered to fight against the oppression of his Ukrainian homeland. He was killed in action on July 30, 2026.

As the faithful gathered in prayer, we remembered Jonathan and entrusted his soul to the loving mercy of God, praying for the consolation of his family and for peace in Ukraine.

Scenes from the 72nd Holy Dormition Pilgrimage

Amid the many moments of prayer and celebration, the sacred grounds also offered quiet spaces for Confession and silent prayer.

Pilgrims took time to step away from the crowds, seek the Lord’s mercy, and spend time in quiet reflection and prayer.

These peaceful moments were a reminder that the pilgrimage is not only a gathering of the faithful, but also an opportunity to encounter Christ in the stillness.

The pilgrimage continued with the Blessing of the Sick, as Bishop Kurt Burnette joined in praying with and blessing the faithful gathered in Sloatsburg.

Those who were sick were anointed with holy oil, entrusting their needs and hopes to the healing mercy of God.

In this series of posts, we’ll share scenes from the 72nd Holy Dormition Pilgrimage with the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate in Sloatsburg, New York.

Held under the theme, “Mary, Our Queen and Loving Mother, Shelter Your Children in Times of War and Injustice,” the pilgrimage brought together the faithful in prayer and devotion.

This post features the Moleben to Blessed Josaphata and the veneration of the relics of Blessed Josaphata and Blessed Martyr Tarsykia at the Blessed Josaphata Shrine, held in honor of the 25th anniversary of the beatification of the SSMI Sisters.
