Atammayatarama Buddhist Monastery The Atammayatarama Buddhist Monastery (ABM or Wat Atam) was launched January 18, 1998 by the Thai and American Buddhist community of Washington state.
(203)

The word Atammayata is from the ancient Pali language in which the Buddhist scriptures are preserved, and means "to cut off or reject the source of suffering."Wat Atam or Wat Atamma as local people called this Buddhist temple. The ABM was certified as a "not-for-profit" corporation of the State of Washington on 22 April 1998. ABM is established with the goal of promoting authentic, classic Buddhis

t teaching in an open and friendly spirit. This place opens to everyone regardless of their belief, socioeconomic status or background. The general philosophy that keeps this place running is “Generosity is not just about material, but also about time, service and giving themselves.” The act of giving would result in building self-confidence at giving and receiving ends. The quality much needed to bring a higher degree of self-acceptance and self-contented.

After participating in the candlelight circumambulation (pradakṣiṇā) as an offering of reverence to the Buddha on Vesak Day, I had the opportunity to greet and converse with many international visitors, particularly Buddhists from India.

Almost all of them expressed the same sentiment:

“This place is not merely a gathering place for people who share the same faith. It is not merely a venue for religious ceremonies. Rather, it is a place that provides knowledge, offers the Dhamma, and gives people the opportunity to practice meditation and directly experience the Dhamma and inner peace for themselves.”

Hearing these reflections brought a deep sense of joy and gratitude. It reminded us that the true purpose of a Buddhist monastery is not simply to preserve traditions or conduct ceremonies, but to serve as a living center of learning, practice, and spiritual cultivation.

When people have the opportunity to study the Buddha’s teachings, cultivate mindfulness, and develop meditation in a genuine way, the Dhamma ceases to be merely a philosophy or a set of beliefs. It becomes a direct experience—something that can be seen, understood, and realized within one’s own heart.

This is perhaps one of the greatest ways to honor the Buddha on Vesak Day: not only by paying homage through rituals, but by putting the Dhamma into practice and allowing wisdom, compassion, and inner peace to flourish in our daily lives.

5/31/2026 Visakha Puja Day : In the evening, people join a circumambulation procession. This involves walking clockwise around a temple’s ordination hall Phra Ubosot three times, carrying lit candles, joss sticks, and flowers. The three rounds symbolize the Three Jewels of Buddhism The Buddha, the Dharma his teachings, and the Sangha the monastic order.
