This Is the Church: (Re)Discovering Our Missional Identity

Every organization on earth keeps score. Businesses count revenue, schools count test results, your phone counts your steps, and churches count too. Attendance, giving, baptisms, parking spaces. Here's what should stop us cold before we open the book: Luke keeps score too. Six times he pauses the story of Acts to file a progress report on the young church, and not one of the things he counts is on our list. This series starts there, at Acts 1:1, with a word almost everyone skims. Luke looks back at his entire Gospel, twenty-four chapters of birth and ministry and cross and empty tomb, and calls all of it what Jesus began to do. Which means Acts is not a museum of what the church used to be. It's a mirror of what the church still is. Same Jesus. Same Spirit. Same unimpressive people.

Most of us learned what "church" means long before we ever read Acts, from a building, a schedule, and a seat. We absorbed it the way a child absorbs an accent, and an inherited definition is the hardest kind to question, because it never feels like a definition at all. It feels like reality. So this series is not a longer to-do list. When the disciples asked Jesus when, He answered who: not "you will do witnessing," but "you will be my witnesses." Identity, not assignment. Over the coming weeks we'll walk the whole book, six progress reports, four widening circles, one unstoppable Word, and discover the engine that drove ordinary people across the street, then the region, then the prejudice, then the ocean. Come ready to be reminded of what you already are. Luke ended his book without an ending, no verdict, no amen, just a chained man still talking and the last word in the Greek meaning unhindered. He left the final page blank on purpose. This series is us picking up the pen.
