PASTOR'S PEN | June 4, 2026

Howard Hendricks, a seminary professor and author, wrote that when he was growing up one of his favorite pastimes was to go to a nearby park and watch the older men playing checkers. One day one of them invited Howard himself to play. Howard said, "It looked easy at first, and I captured one after another of his checkers. But suddenly he took one checker, hopped and skipped right across the board, and yelled, 'King me!' And with that king, he proceeded to wipe me right off the board. That day I learned about long-range vision. No one minds losing a few checkers if he's headed for king territory." When you and I begin to feel discouraged in the Christian life, when we struggle and are tempted to whine and pout and feel sorry for ourselves, God will graciously remind us that, although we seem to be
losing few checkers, we're headed for king territory. In Acts 18, the Apostle Paul is coming off of some difficult experiences: he's by himself at this stage of the journey, he's just been run out of two different towns, and now he faces the prospect of the famously wicked city of Corinth, where he is quickly rejected by his own people. In the midst of it all, God brings him the support of Christian friends, the reassurance of His own presence, and a vision of the goal. When you get discouraged in the Christian life, remember where you're headed in Christ and the promised presence of the One who's taking you there . - Bro. Dean

A GEM FROM CHILDREN'S CHURCH - May 31, 2026
* Fishers of Men *

Using a fishing analogy, the children were taught that sharing the
Gospel requires the right equipment (the Bible), knowing where the
people are (everywhere), and practicing patience. Just as a seed takes
time to grow, "fishing for people" involves planting spiritual seeds and
waiting for God to move in their hearts. The lesson emphasized that
bringing someone to Christ is far more rewarding than any physical
catch.
