As we get to the second half of Paul’s list there is a shift in the type of things that he is talking about. He’s described experiences and characteristics that reveal the authenticity of his ministry, but now he is moving onto talking about some things that are less to do with him and more to do with how God has helped him to do his work. Truth, power, and righteousness are the tools God has given to Paul and which we can take advantage of as well.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

This is a fourth Sunday, so we will be having a hymn-sing at 6:00 PM.

There is one more of what we might call behavioral characteristics in Paul’s list, and that is sincere love. It follows a mention of the Holy Spirit that presents some interpretive challenges for us in this context. Before getting to that discussion we are going to consider what sincere love is and how it is manifested in Paul’s life and should be in ours.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

This is a communion Sunday and w will be having a potluck meal after the worship service.

As I’ve been working my way through these attributes I started with the idea of covering them in groups of three and covering three a week, but that hasn’t exactly played out the way I imagined. Instead I’ve really drilled down on the last two, purity and knowledge and I’ve decided to put longsuffering and kindness together for this week. I feel like the structure we have been imposing doesn’t fit at this point and these two very important characteristics have a vital connection. Let’s look closely at what it means to be patient, and what it means to be kind.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

Before Easter we were discussing Paul’s list of the things that commend him as a minister and apostle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In the last message we discussed the concept of purity and why it is of such importance for someone who represents Christ. Today we are going on to look at knowledge and longsuffering, two attributes that are much more complex than they appear on the surface.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

This Sunday we will also have a hymn-sing at 6:00 pm.

Palm Sunday is one of those odd church holidays where the meaning is maybe a bit hard to decipher from the events. There are a couple of major thoughts about what was going on that day that I want to explore, however. One is the great theme of Jesus the King, coming into His holy city. The other is more subtle, and has to do with the call to be prepared for the coming of the Lord.

The Scripture is Luke 19:28-40.

We are returning to Paul’s list of things that commend him as a minister of the Gospel. We have looked as 9 of the challenges that he has patiently endured in his life and ministry. This week we start looking at some of the characteristics of Paul the person that have made him an effective witness for the Lord. In keeping with the organization we have been following we will start with purity, knowledge, and longsuffering.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

We’ve been working our way through Paul’s list of things that define his life and work for the Lord. This week we are looking at three things that are challenges that are not necessarily common to all humanity and not forced on Paul by the ill-will of others but which are still difficulties he faces because of his service to the Lord. The work that Paul is doing requires certain efforts that lead him to suffer these hardships.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

Last week we began looking at Paul’s list of things which provide the recommendation of his life and ministry. The first three items after patience were focused on things that were not specifically directed at Paul or his ministry, but which were and are a fundamental part of just living life as human beings. We all face the struggles and necessities that he was describing, but how Paul dealt with them was the thing that showed his relationship with God. The list continues into some that are very much tied to both his ministry and his message and which come from specific groups or individuals and are directed at him personally.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

This is also a Communion Sunday and we will be having a potluck lunch after church.

Last week I started to explore this list of various ways in which Paul’s ministry is recommended to the Corinthians. The first item in the entire list is patience, or steadfast endurance which in many ways sets the tone for the entire discussion. After that he goes on to list six things that have happened to him that have required some of that endurance. As we work through the list we see how Paul’s ministry has been attested to not by his words, but by his experience. Sometimes the quality of our relationship with God is seen in the things we endure.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

This is a fourth Sunday, so there will be a Hymn-Sing in the evening at 6:00 with refreshments afterwards.

Paul has had quite the ministry. As we’ve mentioned, a lot of 2 Corinthians so far has involved his defense of his ministry, with a recent side-trip to talk about the actual Gospel message that is the heart of that ministry. As he returns to the discussion of his ministry this next section highlights the challenges, problems, and persecutions he has faced. It’s easy to read this as a sort of boast about how much he has been willing to put up with, but if we keep it in the context of the letter we see that it is Paul continuing to show that only someone with a true and valid message and honorable ministry would have to face these things. The sufferings he has gone through and his perseverance by God’s grace through them is yet more evidence of his devotion to the Gospel message he preaches.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 6:3-10.

We touched last week on Paul’s discussion of reconciliation, the restoration of a right relationship with God. This week we want to follow up on those ideas. For quite a while here Paul has been explaining why he does what he does. In this section he is talking about how the transformation he has undergone in Christ has radically changed his relationship to the world. At the same time he want to make sure that his readers understand that his experience is not really unique, but is representative of the experience all believers should share.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 5:16–6:2.

There is an old joke about “how do you eat an elephant?” Answer: “one bite at at time.” That’s a little bit how we are getting through 2 Corinthians here. We have basically be dealing with one small concept at a time, while still trying to keep a handle on the larger goal. This week we are following up on Paul’s idea of living not for self, but for Christ. This change in how we live is a result of a change in what we are.

The Scripture is 2 Corinthians 5:12–21.

This Sunday is our Annual Congregational meeting. We will have a "finger food" potluck after church followed by the meeting.
