The United Presbyterian Church

The United Presbyterian Church The United Presbyterian Church We are part of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

We invite you to get to know us and our ministries and mission as you read our updates and notes. If you are looking for a church home, let us welcome you in person on Sunday morning or some time during the week. Our congregation seeks to be a disciple community as we acknowledge the presence of God in the world and in our lives. It is our goal to provide spiritual enrichment for those who worship

here -- children, families, and adults of all ages -- and to build a community of believers who are faithful in worship and service. Through our ministry and mission we hope to learn more about God's claim on our lives, and to discern how we can best respond. You will discover this church home to be a place where you will matter because you really matter to God!

As of Thursday, September 15th, The United Presbyterian Church will no longer exist in that capacity, but will be merged with College Avenue Presbyterian Church in the same location and will have a new name: LoveJoy United Presbyterian Church. The page associated with that church can be found here: http://facebook.com/LoveJoy-United-Presbyterian-Church-1075054249214987/?fref=nf. Please follow that link and like the page for all future updates, and remember to "Like," "Comment," and "Share!" Interactions with posts will make those posts more visible on Facebook and will get the word out to more of our community about what we are doing here. Thank you!! -- julie

We’re a welcoming community rooted in Christ’s love. At LoveJoy United, you’ll find joy in worship, friends in community, and purpose in serving others. Everyone’s welcome—just as you are.

Friends,

I hope you enjoyed our different “sermon” yesterday. I admit I lost it when our rich woman fainted dead away – all the way to the floor! That was not rehearsed that way. I was grateful it wasn’t me trying to get up off the floor. Yay, Julie! And thanks to all those who helped with the skit.

The Rummage Sale netted over $2200. Great work, and thanks to all who helped and all who contributed. When I saw the Fellowship Hall Sunday morning, I was really impressed – all was clean and back to normal.

There is one more informational session about the proposed merger this Wednesday after the Lunch Bunch. Please attend if you still have questions or concerns. Or feel free to contact a member of the Merger Team. Remember the congregational meeting this coming Sunday for your vote on the merger. It is very important that everyone be present. The same process of checking membership and using a paper ballot that you used previously will be used next Sunday.

We celebrated two new babies – Colene Tester has welcomed her 5th Great-Grandchild, Elliot; and Eva Rose, daughter of Amanda and Shawn Huff. God’s grace on these two little ones and their parents.
Charley Hubbard was back in worship after his time in hospital and rehab.

There are concerns also: Jim and Marilyn Holt are looking for a new home after the fire they experienced in July. They continue to live in the Extended Stay Facility in O’Fallon.
Glenda McDonald will have surgery August 15.
Leroy Duncan’s mother Joanne is in hospice care, as that family mourns the death of Leroy’s father John this past week.
Helen Miller has been transferred to hospice care at Rosewood in Alton.

And then our friend Jeanie McCoy , Clerk of Session for CAPC, lost her mother this week. The visitation is Monday 4-7pm at Elias Funeral Home in Bethalto, with the service on Tuesday morning at 10am, at the funeral home.

I encourage all of you to include both congregations in your prayers this week, that God’s purpose and plans for us may be made clear.

Grace and peace, Pastor Carol

Friends,

This is such an eventful time in the life of UPC and CAPC. Both sessions approved the Plan for Union at their joint meeting last Thursday. The next step is congregational meeting on August 14 at the end of worship for the purpose of voting on the Plan and approving the officers for the new congregation. I hope all of you will be present to cast your vote.

In preparation for that vote, members of both congregations are invited to attend one of the remaining informational meetings, tonight, Monday, August 1 at 7pm; and Wednesday, August 10 at Noon. The merger team hopes this will give you an opportunity to ask questions and get the information you need to make your choice. As always, if you still have questions, please contact a member of the merger committee or me.

Come help as you are able for the setting up and hosting the Rummage Sale this week.

Next Sunday the sermon time will be a skit, so this might be a good time to invite friends to join you. Also a good time to have your children/ grandchildren stay in worship with you. sit with them in the front so they can see what is going on! Thanks in advance to Julie Gvillo who is helping me put it together.

Prayer Concerns: Helen Miller will be moving from Barnes to hospice care at Rosewood on Monday. Please continue to hold Helen and Eileen in prayer. Also our sympathy to Leroy Duncan in the death of his father John on Sunday morning.

Blessings as you begin this new week – fresh new days to share God’s love with those around you!

Pastor Carol
