VBS at FCCW

VBS at FCCW Come join us for Compassion Camp! A weekly VBS for Sunday School that focuses on Compassion. Compassion helps us to be brave. Compassion helps us love ourselves.

This fall we will engage in music, arts & crafts, painting and coloring giant posters, play, videos, movements like Yoga, Bible stories and scavenger hunts, games and maybe even some cooking together! Every Sunday will be like Vacation Bible School with activities, laughter and fun—a different activity each week, led by special volunteers who are gifted in one of the activities listed above. What’

s really new and exciting is that we are using a VBS series called “Compassion Camp,” which is published by Illustrated Ministry, which has tons of resources and even more ideas on Pinterest. Every Sunday between September 19 and November 21 during our 10:00 worship service, we will focus on the gift of compassion.

9/19-9/26 At the Table Compassion helps us see and welcome. Story: “The Father and Two Brothers” [Luke 15:11-32]

10/3-10/10 To the Neighbor. Story: Friends Bring Their Friend on a Mat to See Jesus [Mark 2:1-12]

11/14-11/21 With the World Compassion gives us a fresh start. Story: Jubilee [Leviticus 25]

Looking forward to seeing everybody for the Blessing of the Backpacks and the cookout after church with everybody. All the basic foods will be provided! This session is going to be full of Compassion and before you know it we’re into Advent and the holidays! Can’t wait to get started! Rev Donna

Join us at 10am on Sundays for our Sunday School lessons about the Beatitudes. We are worshiping in person and we will be starting at the beginning of this curriculum on 2/27.

This week for our virtual Sunday school, we will read Matthew 4:23– 5:12 The Beatitudes. As a participant, you will start to recognize the setting of the Sermon on the Mount and associate the Beatitudes with the teachings of Jesus.

Become familiar with the structure of a beatitude, a blessing and a promise. Learn to apply the structure of a beatitude to everyday life, contemplating what areas of our lives seem mundane, unimportant, or unfortunate and how God might see those areas differently.

The third week of Advent our youth in Sunday School will be talking about Joy! It’s that feeling of well-being deep inside us. Joy is different than happiness. Happiness is when we smile with our faces. Joy is when we smile with our hearts. Imagine the joy we feel when we realize that God has given us enough, and that when we all share what we have, we can do more than feel joy, we can spread joy!

During Advent our youth will be preparing for the coming of Jesus in their hearts and minds. One way they will prepare is by making room in our lives for what matters most like friends and family, for those who need a helping hand, and Jesus.

The first week of Advent we will be talking about Hope! Hope gives us the ability to see things not just for what they are, but for what they can be. So we will be making room - room for imagination, room for the Spirit, and room for possibilities. Advent is a season of possibilities, including the possibility that a baby born in a stable could change the world.

On Sundays 11/14 & 11/21 our youth will be learning how compassion gives us a fresh start. By creating fresh starts, we work with God to care for all and participate in the holy work of renewal so all may joyfully gather at the table together, receiving God’s abundance. Through hearing God’s instruction in Leviticus 25, the children will learn the meaning and history of “Jubilee.” Children will see how rest/sabbath, fresh starts, and taking care of one another are all important forms of compassion and justice.

Come join us at 10am at 115 South Main Street to hear and learn the stories about Compassion!

Last Sunday and this upcoming one on 11/7, our children are learning about Compassion helps us be present with each other. When we follow God’s Spirit - which is always on the move - and are open to the people we encounter along the way, they can experience God’s Spirit through our care. Through the testimony of Ruth, Orpah, and Naomi, children will witness how compassion involves deep trust, an open mind, and a soft heart. Children will learn that being present with each other asks us to let go of our expectations, be flexible, and trust the Spirit, as we seek to lead compassionate lives.

The next 2 Sundays (10/17 & 10/24), we will be learning about Compassion for myself.

Compassion helps us to love ourselves! It means showing gentleness and kindness to ourselves in heart, soul, mind, and strength. When we pay attention to and honor our own selves, we experience how God sees and loves us. Through Jesus’ teaching of an ancient Hebrew commandment, the children will experience self-love as an essential form of compassion. Children will practice affirming themselves through word and body, seeing how doing so connects them to God’s Spirit within.

Join Us for Sunday School!

During the weeks of 10/3 & 10/10 we will be learning about Compassion to the Neighbor. If the weather is nice we will be meeting outside.

Compassion helps us be brave. To be brave is letting God help us see and reach out to our neighbor. When we reach out to our neighbor, we experience the miracle of God’s power to restore and make our community whole. Through the gospel story of friends bringing their friend on a mat to Jesus, the children will witness how compassion often requires risk. Children will learn the ways compassion calls for focus - we keep our eyes on Jesus, even as others might misunderstand or judge our actions.

Sunday School 9/19 - 9/26:
Compassion at the Table: Compassion helps us see and welcome. To see and welcome is how we accept one another. When we gather together at the table, we accept each other in the same way God accepts us. Children will practice recognizing and sharing in the feelings of others as well as connecting with their own bodies/emotions. Through the parable of the father and the two brothers in Luke 15:11-32, children will witness how compassion empowers us to release any anger and judgment we may hold toward others, ourselves, and the world for not being what we wanted or needed. Children will learn how compassion inspires seeing, forgiveness, and welcoming.
