CBS News Texas is taking a moment of silence to remember the lives lost in the July 4, 2025, Hill Country floods.

One year later, we pause to honor the victims, their families, the Camp Mystic community, first responders, volunteers, and everyone whose lives were forever changed along the Guadalupe River.

May we remember them with love and compassion.

🎆 The Fourth of July is almost here! 🇺🇸

As you get ready to celebrate with family, friends, and fireworks, take a few minutes now to plan for a safe holiday. A little preparation can prevent injuries and fire.

🚒 Before you light that first firework, remember:

✅ Check your local laws and only use legal fireworks.
✅ Choose a large, open area away from homes, vehicles, trees, and dry grass.
✅ Keep children and pets at a safe distance, and never allow children to handle fireworks.
✅ Have a bucket of water, garden hose, or fire extinguisher ready before lighting anything.
✅ Light only one firework at a time and never point fireworks toward people, homes, or vehicles.
✅ Never attempt to relight a firework that doesn’t ignite. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it thoroughly in water.
✅ Save the celebration for when you’re sober—never handle fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

🔥 If something goes wrong:
• Move everyone to a safe location immediately.
• If the fire is small and it is safe to do so, use water or a fire extinguisher.
• If the fire begins to spread, threatens a structure, or someone is injured, leave the area and call 911 immediately.

Every year, firefighters respond to preventable fires caused by fireworks. Help us keep those calls to a minimum by celebrating responsibly and looking out for your family, neighbors, and community.

From all of us at South Hunt County Fire Rescue, thank you for helping keep Hunt County safe. Have a fun, memorable, and safe Independence Day! 🇺🇸🚒

Over the last week, severe storms in North Texas brought tornadoes to Springtown, Runaway Bay and Mineral Wells. If you are looking for ways to support recovery efforts, the Horizon Texas Conference has set up a webpage with information about how you can help. That page will continue to be updated with news and opportunities to respond. https://www.htcumc.org/tornadoes-2026

Please continue to pray for all who have been affected, for first responders and relief workers, and for the communities beginning the long work of recovery.
