The Mission of the Church

After Jesus’ death and resurrection, he spent 40 days on earth ministering to people and preparing His disciples for life without Him. Jesus planned on leaving earth and ascending to heaven, but before doing so, He gave His disciples a mission found in Matthew 28:19-20. We often call this The Great Commission.

The Great Commission begins with getting up and going to places where people need to hear about the good news of Jesus. This doesn’t mean you have to leave your country—there are people in your own neighborhood and workplace that need to hear the hope of Jesus.

The ultimate goal of the Great Commission is to make followers of Jesus. So as we go about sharing the good news of Jesus with people, we're to show people how Jesus has changed our lives, and invite them to discover Jesus for themselves.

It can be easy to think that making disciples is the responsibility of our church pastors and ministry leaders. While those things certainly are part of every church’s mission, Jesus intended for every believer to be making disciples.

So take a moment to think about someone in your own life who helped you grow spiritually. Ask God to bring to mind someone you can help and disciple. Then, allow God to give you the courage to share the hope of Jesus with those around you.

Who do you know who needs Jesus? And how will you share your faith with them today?

Our Good Shepherd

Jesus’ “I Am” sayings are powerful statements that give us a look into His nature and heart.

First, they reveal something about His mission on earth. But second, they connect Jesus to God the Father. These “I Am” statements connect theologically to Exodus 3:14, when God revealed Himself to Moses as “I Am.”

In John 10, Jesus tells the people that He is the good shepherd. The mark of a good shepherd is that he's willing to lay down his life for his sheep

Jesus’ statement is in contrast to the religious leaders of His day. The religious leaders would often make things very difficult for followers of God—adding laws and regulations that would actually keep people from Him. Ultimately, they were selfish leaders, considering themselves more important than the people they were leading.

Jesus points out that the highest qualification of a shepherd is selflessness. Jesus is the ultimate shepherd because He truly cares for the people of God. He is like the shepherd in Psalm 23 who leads the sheep by still waters and cares for their souls.
your heart. He desires to love you, guide you, and lead you to a life of peace.

Jesus isn't a leader that wants to make your life burdensome or difficult. Instead, He wants you to experience freedom and grace. Take a moment to consider Jesus as your shepherd, and thank Him for His love, protection, and grace.

Undeserved Mercies

When someone hurts you or, worse, hurts somebody that you love, revenge can seem appealing. After all…

They were mean.
They were selfish.
They talked behind your back.
They broke a vital promise.
They lied about you.
They criticized you.
They ignored you.
They did the unthinkable.
They walked away.

They deserve to be punished, right? To feel some of that same pain? They deserve a consequence that will not only help them learn, but will be just as severe as the inflicted wounds.

And yet—because God sees things differently, both His standards and tactics can be surprising. And that’s why the apostle Paul, writing to the believers in Thessaloniki, said:

“See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:15‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬

Paul’s words sound a lot like Jesus’ words—to love your neighbor as yourself; to do to others what you’d like them to do to you. (See: Matthew 22:38-40)

God’s ways might not always be easy, but they can always be trusted.

When we choose unforgiveness, hate and anxiety and bitterness will likely take root. But when we choose forgiveness (even though we might need to consider new boundaries), love and peace and reconciliation can flourish.

So, what about you? Have you ever been mean? Have you been selfish? Talked behind someone’s back? Broke a vital promise? Lied, criticized, ignored, or done the unthinkable? Have you ever decided to give up and walk away?

In our unique-to-us ways, we’ve all let someone down. We’ve disregarded God’s instructions and, instead, created our own instructions. We’ve messed up.

We deserve God’s wrath but, instead, He’s offered us His unconditional love.

Because of Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice, we didn’t get what we deserve. And even while hanging on that cross, breathing His last earthly breaths, He cried out, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)

Jesus repaid our evil with extreme mercy, leaving us free to conquer evil with good. So today, let’s honor His sacrifice by treating others the way He treated us.

No Greater Love

There is no greater love than the love Jesus showed when He laid down His life-for His friends. For us.

Jesus wasn't just a good man who died an unjust death. He was the spotless Son of God-sinless, blameless, holy. Death had no rightful claim on Him. And yet, He willingly embraced it. He gave up His life so that others might have eternal life.

That alone would be enough to leave us in awe. But what makes His sacrifice even more astounding are the people He died for.

When Jesus spoke these words in John 15, He was talking to a group of His friends who were far from perfect. A hot-headed fisherman. A skeptical doubter. A tax collector. A political zealot. Brothers who once wanted to call down fire on a village.

And beyond that room? Prostitutes.

Outcasts. The unclean. Sinners.

And for us, too.

Jesus laid down His life so that anyone might become His friend. So that everyone might receive His love. So that we might know-deep in our hearts-that we are not rejected or forgotten, but known and embraced.

So, take a moment today and rest in this truth: There is no greater love than the love Jesus has for you. He proved it on the cross.

Easter: Grace that Changes Everything

Written by Anna J Ketchum
Stronger Stuff

Most of us have heard the basics of the Easter story: Jesus Christ, Son of God, died and rose again.

But why did he do that?

We find our answer way back at the beginning of the Bible, in another story most of us already know. Adam and Eve had a perfect existence and a happy relationship with God until they sinned.

And when they sinned, they hid.

Now, God knows everything, so he already knew that they sinned and that they were hiding from him.

So why does God come to the garden and call out, "Where are you?"

He calls out to Adam and Eve because he knows why they hide. They're hiding because they're ashamed. They're hiding because they're afraid of punishment.

But God doesn't want them to feel ashamed or afraid. He wants them to return to the happy relationship they've always had. So he calls for them, asks them what they've done, is honest about what their sin has cost them, provides for their needs, and promises redemption.

And that's why Jesus died and rose again. He knows how each of us has done things that we regret, things that make us want to hide. Jesus died on the cross to provide for your needs, and he rose from the dead to bring you redemption.

The Easter story is about Jesus coming to us and calling out. "Where are you?"

If you're feeling stuck in sin and you're tired of feeling ashamed and afraid, don't worry. All you have to do is call back, "I'm here. I'm sorry. Please help me!"

• Who is the safest person you know? Who can you tell anything to and know they won't judge you?

• Sometimes, our life experiences can leave us wondering if God is a safe person, or we may find that the old ways we used to connect with God don't feel safe anymore. At this point in your life, what environment or practice helps you feel safe with God?

Clues in the House

What’s the farthest you’ve ever walked? Around the block? A mile or two or more?

After they were freed from slavery in Egypt, the children of Israel began a long walk to the Promised Land. But this walk lasted 40 years.

On the way, God spoke with Moses, not only giving him the Ten Commandments but also passing on some detailed instructions on how to build a tabernacle. A tabernacle was kind of like a church—only it was a huge tent. Because their journey was on foot, the tabernacle had to be portable so they could carry it with them.

The tabernacle’s huge tent was to be a place where they could gather in God’s presence and celebrate everything God did for them. It was also the place where they made sacrifices for their sins. The tabernacle was where God’s holy presence could live near them.

And in this house, this huge tent, God put more clues about His promised Messiah. Everywhere in this tent were clues to finding Him.

For example, there were two rooms in God’s house: a big room called the “Holy” and a smaller room called the “Most Holy.” In the large room were three pieces of furniture: an oil lamp stand, a table with 12 loaves of special bread, and an altar for burning incense.

These are three clues pointing to Jesus, the coming Messiah:

Jesus is the light of the world.
Jesus is the bread of life.
Jesus is our intercessor, continually praying to God on our behalf.
The stone tablets of the Ten Commandments are another clue about the coming Messiah because they point to why He came. The commandments teach us God’s standards, but they leave us with a problem. Because no one can obey them precisely over a lifetime or even for one day, every person needs a Savior. Each of us needs our sin covered by the blood of Jesus.

Only Jesus’ blood makes it so that we can be with God all the time, forever. His sacrifice was once for all.

Father, thank you for giving us eyes to see, ears to hear, and hearts to believe. And because you love us, you have left countless clues for us to discover, all leading to your matchless gift of Jesus, the Messiah. How wonderful it is to know that all your promises come true.

Jeremiah calls those who trust Him “blessed,” even as chaos, sin, and idolatry reign around them. He says that people who trust in God “will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” (Jeremiah 17:8 NIV)

We get to choose who and what we worship. Who is your confidence in? Who do you trust? If it is the Lord, take heart knowing that in this you are blessed. An abundant life in God, full of fruit even when sin is all around, is the mark of having chosen to trust Him. What an incredible thing it is to be able to make this choice!

Love One Another

Jesus said two important things about our love for each other. First, that all people will know we are His disciples if we love one another (John 13:34). Second, our unity in Him will let the world know that God had sent Him into the world (John 17:23).

Jesus said the world will know He has come by how His followers love each other. We should love one another in such a way that those who do not believe in Jesus would be astounded and curious to learn more about Him.

Jesus knew this world would be full of anger, strife, and conflict. This is all the more reason it should be a priority to love other people with the same love God has for us. Loving others unveils to the world the great and loving God who loved us first.

Years after Jesus’ resurrection, the apostle John wrote three short letters to followers of Jesus. In his first letter, he takes the time to talk to them about how to love, and why it matters. John wrote: “love is from God … if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another … we love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:7, 11, 19)

He even goes as far as to say, “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar, for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.” (1 John 4:20 ESV)

There’s no way around this. John makes it clear that our love for one another is proof that God’s love is in us. So if we say that we love God, then we should be committed to showing love to each other.

As you reflect on today’s verse, ask yourself: Is there anyone in my life that I need to show love to today? Is there anyone I need to forgive? In what ways can I love my brothers and sisters in Jesus?
