Open and Affirming Statement of the Winthrop Congregational Church, United Church of Christ
Since its founding in 1776, our Winthrop Church has borne witness to the belief that God's love is a gift for all people and for all times. During the turbulent days before the Civil War, our leaders were early advocates for the abolition of slavery and the recognition of the dignity of all people. Our chu

rch community endeavors to accept and embrace all who enter here. We welcome
individuals of every race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, family structure, marital standing, socio-economic status, age, physical and mental ability to join us in the ministry of our church. All are invited to participate in worship, fellowship and leadership. In accordance with our firm and demonstrated belief in Jesus' commandment to love one another, and in the spirit of those who first established our church, we who continue to worship in this place now proclaim the Winthrop Congregational Church, United Church of Christ to be an Open and Affirming Church.

For this Easter season

I think my mother and Mary would have been friends.
For on their darkest days,
Both have gone to the garden.
So I imagine that on their darkest days,
Both Mary and my mother
Have willed new life from earth’s cold ground—
meticulously tending stubborn soil while praying for a miracle—
praying that seeds will grow into flowers
that will take our breath away and remind us again that we are small.

—from the poem “My Mother & Mary” by Rev. Sarah Speed, part of our “A New Creation” Easter 2019 series.

Wanna know what that pile of papers and cards is? It's our church's collection of gift cards for the Family Violence Project. Between cards that individuals purchased on their own and money donated to the church to buy more cards, we raised more than $1200 to share with people making use of Family Violence Project services.

These cards will be distributed to FVP clients so that they can do their own holiday shopping. We hope this will be a bright spot in the season for people escaping interpersonal violence.

It's Giving Tuesday, a time when many people give donations to non-profits and service organizations. If you want to join our church in serving our neighbors, you can donate directly to the Family Violence Project. I'll post a link in the comments.

You can also donate to our deacon's fund, a fund our church and Winthrop Center Friends use to help people throughout the year. I'll post the link to that in the comments, too. Also, I'd like to share other organizations doing good Matthew 25 work (feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, tending to those imprisoned, welcoming immigrants). Feel free to post links in the comments to your favorite organizations doing that work, too.

Thanks for being so generous. We can do so much good when we work together to serve our neighbors,
Pastor Chrissy
