Brothers and Sisters,

Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.

When the author uses the word "hidden," he is referring to protecting it like treasure. That is the way we should view God's Word. It is priceless. We should protect ourselves from the things that could damage it: lack of time in reading it, music, television, or people who counter what the Bible tells us.

The more we read, understand, believe, and remember God's Word, the more we are going to want to do what it says. Not doing what it says is sin or rebellion. When we love people, we want to do what they like and avoid doing things they don't like. How much more important is God?

Brothers and Sisters,

Ephesians 3:20-21

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

It hurts when we hear people blame God for either things they want and don't have or have and don't want. God is perfect. He loves us more than anyone. We may have to endure some things we don't want to, but God looks out for our best interest. In fact, he treats us way better than any of us deserve!

How many things do people do for the glory of themselves? Our goal should be to glorify God in all that we do. The more we think about ourselves, the more stress and problems we have. The more we think about acting like Jesus, the happier we are. It blesses those we help, makes God happy, and makes us feel good.

Brothers and Sisters,

John 20:19

19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

Jesus had died on the cross. His disciples had been told by Jesus what was going to happen, but they didn't quite understand. Their leader was dead, and they were afraid that the Jewish leaders would kill them as well because they were Christians. Imagine how distraught they must have been!

After rising from the dead, Jesus went to see his disciples. He wanted to comfort them and give them peace. Jesus and others in the Bible have told us a lot about what is going to happen. We need to try hard to understand it and prepare for it. Jesus wants us to comfort us and give us peace as well. Unlike the disciples, we should not be fearful of what people might do to us because we are Christians.

Brothers and Sisters,

Romans 12:15

Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

How happy are we for people who receive good news? We know that if we truly love them, we feel almost happier for them than they do for themselves. What about others? How many people are we happy for when they are happy?

When we truly love people, we hurt almost more for them than they do for themselves. We try to do what we can to comfort them. We try to protect them and help where we can. Jesus' friend, Lazarus, had been dead for four days before Jesus arrived. Despite knowing that he would bring Lazarus back to life, he cried out of empathy in seeing Lazarus' sister, Mary, and other Jews crying (John 11:1-44).

Brothers and Sisters,

Acts 20:24

However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

When Paul says, "I consider my life worth nothing to me," he means that he doesn't consider his life to be his own. It isn't about how he felt, recognition he received, or money he made. He understood that it was more important to see what he could give in life, rather than what he could receive.

Paul had two goals. One, was to live his life to the very end for Jesus Christ, and the other was to tell people about him being our Savior. Paul had as good of a testimony as anyone. He had been persecuting Christians. Christ could have tortured him before killing him, but he changed Paul's life to be a witness for him. Our two goals should be the same as Paul's.

Brothers and Sisters,

John 3:3

3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Jesus was telling this to Nicodemus, a devout Pharisee. This was a foreign concept to Nicodemus and a lot of people today. How can someone be born again? We all have a physical birth from our mothers, but we also have a spiritual birth when we accept Christ as our Savior.

Part of becoming born again means repenting of our sins (Acts 20:21). It is telling God we are sorry and trying not to commit those same sins again. There should be a desire to want to be baptized. This is a public declaration of telling people Jesus is number one in our lives.

After we accept Christ as our Savior, we are given the Holy Spirit. We want to listen and obey him. Being born again is dying to our old self and living for Jesus (Galatians 2:20). Unless we sell out for Jesus, we are still on sale for Satan. Do we want to spend eternity in heaven or hell?

Brothers and Sisters,

John 15:13

13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

These words were spoken by Jesus. He not only said it, but he demonstrated it. He loved us so much that he gave up his life at the age of thirty-three. That sacrifice provided us with our only opportunity to live eternally in heaven (John 14:6).

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that honors those who died while serving in the military. These people followed Jesus' words and example. We should show our appreciation to them for protecting our country. It is important to thank God every day for sending his only begotten son to take away our sins and give us salvation (John 3:16) and for those who gave their lives to protect our freedom and country.

Brothers and Sisters,

Galatians 2:20

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Commitment. It is something we admire in others, and it is something we can struggle with ourselves. It is very difficult to see commitment without love. Commitment is doing the things that aren't easy or that we don't like to for a greater purpose.

Jesus is the ultimate example of commitment. His life was all about pleasing our Father and helping others. He was selfless. He even gave up his life for us. The more we die to our old self and live for Christ, the happier and better off we will be.

James 2:10

10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

It is important to repent of our sins daily. We should want to grow to become more like Jesus. This involves doing both more of what the Bible tells us we should do and stop doing the things the Bible tells us not to do. Fortunately, we have the help of the Holy Spirit after we accept Christ as our Savior.

We need to remind ourselves that regardless how much we grow as Christians, we will still sin until we die or Christ comes back. One sin is enough to keep us away from God because he can't have sin in his sight (Isaiah 59:2). This is a constant reminder of how dependent we are on Jesus to take away our sins. We need to not only thank him frequently, but we should commit our entire lives to living for him.

Romans 15:4

4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.

Paul is talking about writings of the Old Testament. Although we live under the New Covenant, all scripture is beneficial. The Bible is pretty thick. There is a lot of content that God wanted to teach us.

One of the most important things people search for is hope. This is exactly what God's Word provides. Although there is a lot of history in the Bible, there is also a lot of prophecy. Every prophecy either has or will be fulfilled.
