Meitin Alliance for Growth and Learning - MAGAL Religious School

Meitin Alliance for Growth and Learning - MAGAL Religious School The Meitin Alliance for Growth and Learning is a collaborative religious school offered by Temple Israel and Temple Shir Shalom in Central Florida.

Temple Israel, Temple Shir Shalom and Congregation Beth Am have joined forces to create a collaborative religious school for our children. The newly formed community school will be called the Meitin Alliance for Growth and Learning, a Collaborative Religious School. The school will be known as MAGAL, the Hebrew word for circle and a symbol of oneness. Although each congregation has its unique char

acter, we are one in our commitment to provide a strong Jewish education and identity to our children. Classes will be held at Temple Israel and will continue at the same times as before, Wednesdays from 5pm-6:30pm for 3rd-7th grade and Sundays from 9am-12:30pm for Pre-K – 7th grade. We are so happy that our children will have twice as many Jewish students with whom to connect.

Students learned about Shavuot with a locked box puzzle game that they worked together to solve. Then we played Jeopardy, with the topics being subjects we learned about this year. Then they helped lead the younger students in an all-school program, learning about Passover, Sukkot, and Shavuot with matching games, popsicle sticks, and homemade ice cream. See you next year!

Today we finished our Hebrew reading and gave our rewards!
Judaic Studies K-2
Today we learned about Shavuot. We watched a video about what the holiday is about. Then we played charades, Pictionary, and bingo with the 10 commandments.

3-4 Ms Megan
Today in Judaic Studies, we learned about the Jewish festival of Shavuot. We explored the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and discussed why, although the holiday centers on the Torah, we also read the Book of Ruth. We read the story of Naomi and Ruth and even made ice cream to enjoy together.
I truly could not have asked for a better group of students this year. It has been such a joy getting to know each of them, watching them grow, hearing their insights, and seeing their personalities flourish. Thank you for sharing your wonderful kiddos with me this school year.

5-7 Ms Kate
For Hebrew, students teamed up to play Tower Defense 2 in Blooket with the V’ahavta. During Judaic Studies, we learned about Yizkor, counted our tzedakah money, and voted to send it to the Seminole County Animal Shelter. Then we ate watermelon slices outside while learning about Lag B’Omer, and played freeze dance while answering discussion questions.

We played a fun team review game where the students were challenged to read letter and vowel combinations. Then the students played aleph bet bingo while we finished our end of the year testing. Prizes will be given out next week. Students who are absent will receive theirs the last week of school.
Judaic Studies K-2
Today we learned about hospitality and being welcoming to those in our lives and our homes. We role played acting different ways when people enter the classroom and talked about which one feels the best. We watched a shaboom about welcoming people in your home. Then we made signs for our homes to welcome people. We also made birthday cards for Rabbi’s birthday today!

5-7 Ms Kate
On Sunday, we played Stroll Through Shabbat with Haftarah cards. During Judaic Studies, students learned about the blessings before and after the Haftarah. Then we played a Blooket, and learned about Yom Ha’atzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim.

Today we began our Hebrew end of the year testing. The students are doing amazing. We also did some letter and vowel review today.

Judaic Studies K-2
Today we joined Mrs. Meg’s class for a guest speaker - a rabbi from Hillel (and also Nessa’s dad). He spoke to the kids about Jewish symbols. Then we did a quick lesson on Abraham and Sarah and completed a fun night sky project with glitter!

Please continue to practice Hebrew at home. We will continue testing next week and the students are working very hard.

3-4 Ms Megan
In Judaic Studies, this was my favorite day of the year so far! We were fortunate to have a special guest, Rabbi Jordan Gerson, Executive Director of UCF Hillel, who taught us about meaningful Jewish symbols such as tefillin, tallit/tzitzit, etrog, lulav, and more. The students were able to put their hands on many of the symbols we were learning about, deepening their understanding and connection to their Jewish identity.
Many thanks to Rabbi Gerson!

All Hebrew groups: Today we reviewed what each student needs to know in order to earn the end-of-year bonus treat!
Group A reviewed the letters Alef through Samech and added Ayin. Students practiced placing the Alef-Bet in order to strengthen their recognition of the letters. We also completed a letter puzzle and reviewed the corresponding sounds.
Groups B and C worked together using flashcards to review.
Group B focused on reviewing all letters and continued practicing vowels, along with helpful tips and strategies to remember each sound. To pass, students must know all letters and some vowels.
Group C reviewed letters, final letters, and vowels. After quizzing one another, they played games to reinforce their knowledge.
Please continue reviewing at home. Every student has been offered additional support if needed. Feel free to reach out to Mrs. Tricia or me if you would like any extra resources.

5-7 Ms Kate
After working on Hebrew prayers, we played a new game called Race Through Shabbat. During Jewish Studies, we talked about the differences between Torah and Haftorah. Then, we discussed Yom Hazikaron (Israeli Memorial Day) and the differences between how America and Israel honor Memorial Day. Then students researched Yom Hashoah and made an educational video about what they researched, which has been posted to the MAGAL page. Some students were on-screen and everyone participated in researching and recording.

The students are working hard on learning their prayers. They will be tested on all of the prayers we have been working on after Passover. Today I worked one on one with each of them to help them identify what they still need to work on. We reviewed letters and vowels by writing English words in Hebrew. Then we reviewed some of the prayer words that they are having trouble with and practiced breaking the words into syllables to make them easier to read. Please continue to practice the prayers over Passover break. They have been challenged to try and find some of their prayers at their Passover Seders.

3-4 Ms Megan
We read the Torah story of the 10 plagues finishing our Torah section on Passover
Group A added pey/fey this week—such exciting progress as we near the end of the Alef-Bet! The students are working incredibly hard, and it truly shows. For their final assessment, they’ll need to recognize all of the letters.
Group B focused on reviewing vowel sounds, identifying which ones still need practice and which they’ve mastered. For their final, they should know all letters along with several vowel sounds. They also had fun reinforcing their skills by playing bingo with letters and vowels.
Group C worked on matching final letters with their corresponding forms and continued reviewing letter names and sounds. For their final assessment, they’ll need to know all letters, final letters, and vowel sounds.
As a whole group, we practiced identifying letters out of order and reviewed the sounds each letter makes. We also shared tips and strategies for letters students find challenging. Extra support tools, like flashcards for home practice, are available and have been offered to each child. Please feel free to reach out to me or Tricia if your child would benefit from additional support—we’re happy to help in any way as we head into the final stretch of the school year!
The remainder of the day was spent participating in a school-wide program, where students worked together to rotate through engaging, hands-on Passover activity centers.

5-7 Ms Kate
We worked on our Hebrew skills followed by a discussion of Pesach and the Seder. As always, the students had penetrating questions. Push them to ask more questions at the Seder! The rest of the day was spent in a special schoolwide program helping them learn the order of the Seder.

Judaic Studies
Today we learned about Passover. We learned some of the key terms during Passover like Haggadah, Seder, and afikomen. We read a book where the students were assigned roles in the Passover story and read parts. We also gave out plague finger puppets. Finally, we made fortune tellers with Passover questions on them. The students did great at helping each other with this project.

Hebrew 3/4
In Hebrew today the students write a sentence using Hebrew letters. This made their brains work hard as there are several English sounds that we don’t have in Hebrew. Then we played a speed game with two teams to find words in the prayers we have been working on and sequence words in prayers.
END OF THE YEAR HEBREW TESTING FOR K-4
After Passover, we will begin end of the year Hebrew testing. We spoke to the students about this today so each student knows what they need to work on. Every student will receive prizes for working hard this year and showing up. Students that have reached their goals will reserve an extra achievement prize. The expectations to earn these prizes are different for each Hebrew group based on what that group has been working on this year. Group A needs to know the aleph bet letters that their group has worked on (currently up to ayin).
Group B needs to know all of the aleph bet letters and 3 vowel sounds (any 3 will do).
Group C needs to know all of the aleph bet letters, all of the vowels, and at least 3 finals.
The third and fourth grade Hebrew group has been working on reading prayers all year. They have been assessed throughout the year to ensure they were learning them. To earn their prizes, they need to be able to read all of the prayers they have learned this year (indicated with black stars on the practice pages that went home today).
Please let us know if we can support your child in any way to achieve these goals. Mrs. Megan and Mrs. Tricia are happy to provide resources, ways to practice, and even stay after school to discuss ways to support your student in reaching their goals.

3-4 Ms Megan
We started our day with the Torah story of Moses from Exodus. The kids really seemed to enjoy it and kept asking for more! 😊
In Judaic Studies, I created an “Escape Egypt” activity to help the kids review the lessons and history of Passover in a fun way. We talked about the symbolism of the traditional Seder plate, as well as other symbolic foods that can be added to a modern Seder plate to include and represent more marginalized groups. The kids worked together to solve clues and successfully “escape Egypt” as a team.

Hebrew K-2
In Hebrew, we explained to the children that everyone will receive something special for all their hard work this year. There will also be a bonus gift for students who have reached certain milestones:
Group A: Knowing the Alef-Bet
Group B: Knowing the Alef-Bet plus some vowels
Group C: Knowing the Alef-Bet, including final letters, as well as vowels
Each child has been assessed throughout the school year, and that information has been sent home. I asked the children if they had what they needed to review and practice at home, and anyone who requested flashcards was sent home with them. Please feel free to reach out if there is anything else I can do to support your child’s learning.
In Group A, we added the letter Ayin. The students put together Alef-Bet puzzles in order, then reviewed the letters and sounds out of order. They also used moon sand with Alef-Bet cookie cutters to quiz each other, which they loved.
Groups B and C played a matching game with final letters and vowels, and then worked in their workbooks reading letter blends out loud.

5-7 Ms Kate
We played a new Hebrew game called Hebrew Ninja. In Judaic Studies, we learned about Rabbi Isaac Alfasi, or the Rif. We then had a Havdalah service in Minecraft, and then passed around different spices and guessed what they were. Hope everyone has a great Spring Break!

We had great fun getting ready for and enjoying the Purim Carnival.

3-4 Ms Megan
We started the day by reading a wonderful PJ Library book about Queen Esther and her journey to becoming the heroine we know and love. While her story isn’t an easy one, it shows how courage and faith can pave the way to blazing a powerful trail.
Hebrew was a bit shorter today, but we still made meaningful progress in each group.
Group A reviewed the letters out of order. Each student completed an Alef-Bet puzzle and labeled the sounds each letter makes. We also used sticker charts to track the letters they confidently recognize and the ones they’re still working on.
Group B continued their sticker charts as well, focusing on both letters and vowels, identifying what they know with confidence and what they’re still strengthening.
Group C worked on a matching project to reinforce their understanding of the final letters.
We wrapped up the day with lots of fun at the Purim Zootopia Carnival!

5-7 Ms Kate
In celebration of Purim, students rehearsed and then performed a Zootopia parody of the Purim story for the other classes. Then they all joined in the Purim celebration in the social hall, which included a petting zoo, mask making, and sugary snacks.

Today we learned about Purim. We read a silly. Purim story, watched a Purim video, and talked about how we celebrate Purim. Then we made hamantashen out of paper.
Next week, the students are invited to dress up for our Purim celebration.
Hebrew 3/4
In Hebrew today we reviewed letters and vowels with dice. Then we worked on a new prayer, the shehecheyanu. We broke down each word by syllable to read it. Then the students laid out all do the prayer words we have worked on all year and did a scavenger hunt to find the correct words. Finally, they built a few prayers using their prayer word cards.

3-4 Ms Megan
Today’s Torah story focused on Rebecca. We discussed why Abraham sought a wife for his son and explored how marriage customs have changed over time.
During Mitzvah Minute, we discussed the special mitzvot of Purim — giving food to friends (mishloach manot), giving charity (matanot la’evyonim), and reading the Megillah.
In Judaic Studies, we enjoyed a dramatic reading of the Purim story. Every child had a role, along with movements to act out each time their character’s name was mentioned. We also talked about Purim traditions such as dressing in costumes and making noise when we hear Haman’s
Hebrew
Group A added the letter samech to their growing collection of letters. We are continuing to practice identifying letters out of order and strengthening our ability to match each letter with its sound.
Group B focused on vowels, including placing multiple vowels with letters to build reading confidence. Students reinforced their learning through a memory game and hands-on practice with kinetic sand.
Group C was introduced to the five final letters of the Alef Bet. We played a matching game and worked on recognizing their sounds and pairing them with vowels.

5-7 Ms Kate
On Sunday, students helped organize cards based on prayers. After break, students finished putting together their mishloach manot bags, and we discussed who they would be giving them to. Then we learned about traditions and parts of mourning in Judaism, did a word search, and played Crazy Kingdom, a Blooket game.
