Question for May: What are the key mitzvot associated with counting the Omer, and what happens if someone misses a day?
Answer: The primary mitzvah is: Counting each of the 49 days from the second night of Passover until the night before Shavuot.
This includes several halachic components: Count at the start of each day, which is after nightfall.
Recite a beracha (blessing) before counting. State both the day and the week once weeks begin (e.g., “Today is 14 days, which are 2 weeks of the Omer”). Like all blessings, the beracha and counting must be done out loud.
Rabbinically, there is also an emphasis on continuity (temimut)—a complete, unbroken count.
What happens if someone misses a day? This depends on when the omission is realized.
If a person forgets but remembers before the next nightfall: They should count without saying the blessing, and then continue counting subsequent nights with a blessing.
If a day is completely missed: The person continues counting the remaining days, but without a blessing from that point onward.
