In a world full of burdens, striving, and weariness, Jesus does not simply offer us advice for carrying the load. He calls us to Himself. Come to Christ, take His yoke upon you, and find rest for your soul.

This Sunday, Rev. Isaías Godoy will preach from Matthew 11:25–30, where Christ gives one of the most gracious invitations in all of Scripture: Come & Rest.

The Christian’s rest is not found in pretending our failures do not matter or convincing ourselves that we have finally done enough.

It is found outside of ourselves, in the finished work of Christ.

Our performance will rise and fall. Some weeks may tempt us toward pride, others toward defeat. But the believer’s standing before God does not fluctuate with either. Christ has borne the curse, His righteousness is ours by faith, and the threat of judgment has been removed.

That is why the gospel gives real rest.

We can face our failures honestly, forgive those who have wronged us, and pursue obedience without the crushing burden of trying to secure God’s acceptance.

The curse fell on Christ. The blessing is ours in Him.

Stop running. Start resting.

At the cross, Christ endured far more than physical suffering.

The sinless Son of God willingly stood in the place of sinners and bore the curse that was ours. The One who had known eternal fellowship with the Father entered the darkness of judgment and cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Why?

So that those who deserved to be cast away could instead be brought near. Christ bore the curse of the law so that, united to Him by faith, we might receive the blessing.

“He was forsaken that you should not be forsaken. He was cursed so that you would not be accursed, but blessed.”

It is possible to do good things while quietly believing that those good things should earn something from God.

We pray, read Scripture, attend worship, serve others, and seek to live faithfully. But then when suffering comes, prayers seem unanswered, or life does not unfold as we expected, and the thought creeps in: “Lord, after all I’ve done, why is this happening to me?”

But our obedience is not currency, and God is not indebted to us.

The gospel calls us away from bargaining with God and back to receiving from Him. His favor is not purchased by our piety. In Christ, it is given by grace and received through faith.

God’s law does not ask for our best effort. It demands perfect and perpetual obedience.

That is why the law can never become a ladder by which sinners climb their way to God. One sin is enough to expose our guilt and leave us without any righteousness of our own to offer.

But the law’s verdict is not the end of the story.

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.” — Galatians 3:13

The standard we could never meet was fulfilled by Christ, and the curse we deserved fell upon Him. Our hope, then, is not that we have obeyed enough, but that Christ has obeyed perfectly and given Himself for sinners.

The gospel did not begin in the New Testament.

Long before the coming of Christ, before Moses and the giving of the law, God declared His promise to Abraham. Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.

From Abraham to us, there has never been another way of salvation. God’s people have always lived by His promise, receiving by faith the righteousness they could never achieve for themselves.

One gospel. One promise. One way of salvation.

The Christian life is not sustained by a power different from the one that began it.

The Spirit who gives new life is the same Spirit who continues His work in us. Every real change, every growth in holiness, every step of transformation is ultimately the work of God’s grace.

We do not outgrow our dependence upon Him. What God begins by His Spirit cannot be perfected by the flesh.

Spiritual deception does not always come as an obvious rejection of the truth. Sometimes it comes quietly, gradually turning our eyes away from Christ and back toward ourselves.

Paul asks the Galatians, “Who has bewitched you?” The danger was real. Satan would have us look inward, either to take pride in our own efforts or to despair over our failures.

The answer to both is the same: look again to Christ crucified.

Who are the true sons of Abraham?

Paul’s answer has nothing to do with physical descent. The family of Abraham is a family marked by faith. Those who share Abraham’s faith, trusting not in themselves but in God’s promise fulfilled in Christ, are counted among his sons.

The gospel has always been received the same way: by grace, through faith.
