A MINUTE REGARDING PEACEFUL ACTIVISM, WINSTON-SALEM FRIENDS MEETING
(Approved in monthly meeting, 5th month, 24th day, 2026.)
Winston Salem Friends Meeting has a concern for the ongoing tensions and divisions in our nations and our world. As we believe there is the image of God in each person, we choose to demonstrate respect for everyone, and to interact empathically with those with whom we share this planet.
For nearly 400 years, we Quakers have practiced nonviolent approaches to peacemaking among individuals, groups, and countries. In the current political climate, in our conversations with our political representatives, we ask for those who represent us in local, state, and national government offices to seek conversation rather than confrontation when working to resolve conflicts.
We see that the safeguards of the balance of power in the federal government are being eroded, and that personal preference, rather than law, is guiding policy. Our Quaker history is rich with examples of Friends speaking Truth to power as we strive to follow the teachings of Jesus. We believe the protests and resistance to the overreach of the federal government in its stated goal of eliminating illegal immigration are examples of demonstrating such Truth.
QUERY:
As I try to let my life speak Truth, do my words and actions reflect peaceful responses to conflict which often arises in our country? Do I try honestly to listen to others whose opinions differ from mine, hearing what they say, rather than being prepared with my answer before they’ve finished speaking?
